Geocache Description:

This is a nice, virtual cache in one of Charlotte’s Largest Cemeteries. There is easy walking and driving here and you will be able to park your car on the side of the road while you look for names on the monuments. The cache can be solved during your lunch hour or after work while you wait for traffic to diminish. Hopefully, you will learn a little something about Charlotte, its families and its Leaders.

The “OLD SETTLERS CEMETERY” located behind the First Presbyterian Church between Church and Poplar streets was Charlotte’s first public cemetery but it was rapidly filling up by the time of the Civil War. The city fathers bought property on the west side of town for a new and larger Cemetery and it would be called “ELMWOOD CEMETERY”. Although there were some few burials before 1865, the new cemetery wasn’t officially opened or dedicated until after the Civil War. Presently, the cemetery has over 6,000 interments and now incorporates the old “PINEWOOD CEMETERY” which was originally for African Americans.

Below are the coordinates for the tombstones or monuments for you to find and note. Some of the people will be identified by name while others will be identified by their accomplishments or by how they died. After you find the monument enter the four digit death year (ex. 1869) or the two digit age at death (ex. 49).
