this cache adventure will take you through the heart of downtown santa monica, california! the game will take you through this historic city where you will see many world famous sites. although the entire experience will take you an afternoon, the journey isn’t strenous (no hiking/bushwacking/ropes) and can be enjoyed by anyone willing to make the walk.
the game: how to play
to play the game, you will need the 11 photographs taken in santa monica. for convenience, download the pdf “info-pak” which contains all the instructions, photos and tables needed to find the cache. you can also download the jpg images and create your own info-pak (see images below).
the goal is to locate each one of the red dots in the 11 photographs. you will need to stand where the red dot would be (the dots have since washed away) and take a gps reading. make sure you are getting a good reading and record your coordinates. to find the next red dot, follow the point-to-point instructions below.
how to calculate the final cache location
to find the latitude (n/s coordinate): add all 11 latitude coordinates and then divide by 11 (i.e. average them). add 01.011 to your result.
to find the longitude (w/e coordinate): add all 11 longitude coordinates and then divide by 11 (i.e. average them). add 00.711 to your result.
i suggest you use the table in the info-pak to make life easier. you might want to have a calculating device handy.
simply santa monica: point-to-point instructions
- the starting point: n 34 01.095 w 118 29.947
- from point 1, head 960 feet south-east.
- continue south-east about half-mile. pass through or around obstacles.
- go another 720 feet to reach point 4.
- head 600 south-south-east, then walk 875 feet towards the water. continue north-westerly along the water for approx 0.3 miles. enjoy the views.
- it is very close - 170 feet away.
- make way 0.3 miles westerly.
- go back easterly about 0.2 miles.
- next point is 0.7 miles away - follow the concrete path in north-west direction until you can cross over the road and continue heading north-west.
- from point 9 continue north-west journey for about half-mile.
- continue further north-west for another half-mile.
parking in santa monica
santa monica has many public parking lots. three along fourth street. three more along second street. these lots are numbered 1-6 in big steel letters. many of the office buildings in the area also provide parking, but watch the rates. street/meter parking is available but may not provide the time necessary to complete the cache. the santa monica mall also offers parking.
simply santa monica in 2024 and beyond
on occassion, i recieve emails from geocachers informing me that this cache can't be solved because the locations don’t match the photographs. after 20 years, i will reveal the truth... the photographs *never* matched the real world as they were intentionally selected from different time periods... the locations may not look the same, but they are still there and you can find them.
