This is a virtual cache. It was originally a real one, but it was stolen quite quickly. At GeoMonkey's suggestion, we're reviving it as a virtual cache. Even if there's nothing here to sign or swap, it's still a nice place that's well worth a visit. Be sure to visit the underground parts where the cache was originally hidden. Bring a torch or two.The construction of military fortifications at various locations around Sydney Harbour began in the very early 1800s when the government of the day feared invasion by the French. The undetected nighttime arrival of four American warships in late November 1839 prompted the building of further reinforcements, including the simple firing wall and cannon mount at the bottom of the hill near the harbour below this cache. The fortifications where this cache is hidden were built in the 1870s when fear of a Russian invasion mounted.
This area is full of history, even the small lighthouse at the eastern side of the point is heritage listed, having been built at the turn of the last century. The mast of the original HMS Sydney, circa World War 1, stands guard at the waters edge on Bradley's Head.
This cache is hidden slightly to the immediate north of all of these wonderful buildings, right between two trees (you guess which two!!!). It is in a container similar to those which hold GeoPiggies caches '1' and '2'.
Our 'Russians' cache is sited in the Sydney Harbour National Park and you can drive your car to within metres of the location of the cache when the park is open. Gates are closed during night hours, presently from 8pm to 6am (times are well signposted).
A night-visit is a perfectly realistic goal if you are prepared to walk for perhaps 500-600m. It will improve your chances of meeting some of the residents - we met with Mr Possum and Mr Wallaby when we hid this cache!
When you're all done caching, consider heading down to the bottom of the hill to take in the view and perhaps have a picnic. The Zoo is right next door too.
