Geocache Description:

“Play It Safe!” is a multi-cache with a twist. The final cache container is a small, flat, locked box. In order to find and open the box, you must first locate a Safecracker Travel Bug. This is not a newbie-friendly cache. Note that many experienced cachers have needed multiple trips to complete it. Enjoy this challenge!!

Note!! Container and lock were replaced in December, 2016. IF YOUR KEY DOES NOT HAVE A LABEL THAT SAYS SAFECRACKER V.2, IT WILL NOT OPEN THE SAFE! In this case, please contact the CO for assistance.

Preparation: Read and print the entire cache description before attempting this cache. You will not be able to locate the final box, or open it, without having the key (a "Safecracker" travel bug) in your possession. Take a pencil with you on your journey. No special equipment should be needed.

The listed coordinates are for the Gwynns Falls Trail sign, where your journey begins. Walk west from the parking lot to the large sign to begin this cache hunt.

STEP 1: From your current location (the Gwynns Falls Trail sign), complete the following computations to get started. The Key # referenced below is found on the Safecracker key. You can't complete this cache without the key and the number found on it.

  1. You should ADD (Key # - 6) from the Safecracker Key tag to the decimal digits of the latitude of your present location.
  2. You should SUBTRACT (244 + KEY #) from the decimal digits of the longitude of your current position. The resulting waypoint (POINT A) is your destination.

STEP 2: POINT A is a 2-trunked beech tree on the uphill side of the trail. There is a date carved into the tree (3-24-YY). Make note of the 2-digit year (YY).
You will use the year (YY) to make some computations when you reach the stop ahead.
From the 2-trunked beech tree (POINT A), project a waypoint that is 646 feet at a bearing of (YY - 8) degrees. This will be POINT B.

STEP 3: POINT B is a virtual stop at what is suspected to be an 1886 boundary stone for the City of Baltimore. It is located along the old boundary of Baltimore City. An old map shows a marker in the area of the confluence of Dead Run and Gwynns Falls. The stone is about 9-12 inches high and bears no inscription. It is on top of a hill near a cluster of small trees.

STEP 4: Did you find the stone?? If you did, now project a waypoint from the stone (POINT B) to a bench located near the trail (POINT C). The bearing (in degrees) will be (YY - 69). Remember all bearings use TRUE north, not MAGNETIC north. The distance (hundredths of a mile) will be YY MINUS 76. Note: The safest way to walk to POINT C is to follow the old Wetheredsville Road bed north along the Gwynns Falls, turn right onto Windsor Mill Rd, and follow the sidewalk across the Gwynns Falls to the trailhead on the other side. I do not recommend trying to walk along Franklintown Rd, even though it might appear shorter on the map.

STEP 5: Have a seat on the bench (POINT C). This is the last stop before you get to the safe. I hope you have the key!!! Project a waypoint from the bench (POINT C) to the locked cache container (POINT D)
The bearing (in degrees) will be (YY + 8). Remember all bearings use TRUE north, not MAGNETIC north.
The distance (in hundredths of a mile) will be (YY - 64).

The final cache container should be very well hidden, but in an obvious location. Be discreet, as usual, while searching for the container and logging the find. Please lock and re-hide the cache so it can't be seen.
Once you have found “Play It Safe!”, remember to take the key ("Safecracker" travel bug) to a local cache or hand it off to another cacher. Please log the travel bug properly online, so the next searchers (and I) will know where it is.
