Geocache Description:

Coastal Artillery Batteries in Pensacola, Florida.

There are four coastal artillery batteries located in the Gulf Islands National Seashore near Pensacola, Florida. (A couple of which you can't drive to right now, they've been blocked by the Park Rangers for some reason, just do the ones you can for now). Battery 234, Battery Langdon, Battery Worth, and Battery Cooper. Each is unique but all share the main purpose, which was to protect Pensacola Bay and the Navy Yard there.

Battery Worth, Cooper, and Langdon started life as Coastal Artillery in the WWI era. Battery Worth and Langdon were upgraded during WWII to greater capacity and strength. Battery 234 was a WWII creation with two Shield guns of unusual design.

To log this virtual cache go to the following coordinates and answer the given questions: (as always, do not put your answers in your log entry, even encrypted)

Battery Langdon - N 30 19.100 W 087 15.745 Why was it the most powerful gun emplacement in the area?

Battery Cooper = N 30 19.261 W 087 16.935 What happened to the guns that were there, and where did the present gun come from?

Battery 234 - What was the pressing problem for the soldiers at Battery 234?

Battery Worth - You have to go around behind the battery down the Battery Worth Picnic Area road. This is the more spectacular of the area batteries. What did the battery become after 1942?

There is an $20.00 charge to enter the park where these batteries are located, along with Fort Pickens. It is well worth the charge to see all the sites. The entrance fee is good for 7 days anywhere in the Gulf Islands National Seashore Parks. You can purchase a yearly national parks pass for $80.00 that is good for one year and will get you into all the national parks, monuments, and seashore parks.
