Geocache Description:

Welcome to The District No. 7 cache located on the site of the Montville school, on Doodletown Road, in Doodletown, New York.

District No. 7
The School Circa 1926.

Copyright: Doodletown By Elizabeth Stalter

Doodletown is the pioneer hamlet located just southwest of the Bear Mountain Bridge over the Hudson River north of New York City in Rockland County.

Doodletown was established around 1750, flourished in the late 1800 and early 1900 and finally met its demise in the mid 1960 when the Palisades Interstate Park's Commission acquired the land and demolished the buildings.

This school was the only building to survive. However human nature being what it is the school was horribly vandalized and had to be demolished in the 1980. It stood as the pride of the hamlet from its construction in 1926 to its last school year 1964/65.

The best parking is on Rt. 9W. Then walk up Gray's Hill, the last official paved entrance into Doodletown.

The cache is in a child's lunch box and is well stocked with school supplies, pencils, chalk, and toys and of course a logbook. The container is not waterproof but the contents are in zip lock bags and should be fine.

This cache could be done in snow but I would hate to have snow tracks leading to the hiding place so please use your judgment. GPS reception is horrible at the cache site but is great 20 feet away so search accordingly.

I hid this cache in the snow so if when you find it it happens to be poorly hidden please hide it better then you found it. Things were frozen and I couldn't move many things to hide it properly.

Enjoy your walk through history.
