What makes a good cache?

Do you want to be inspired to make better caches?

This meet has been accepted as a Maker Magic event- click the link to find out more about the Maker Magic season.

The event is a local-ish North East London-ish/borders of Essex meet to chat about what makes a good cache, booked into The Box, Epping with a number of experienced cache owners discussing how they set up their more interesting caches - I have invited many of the local active cache owners who have caches with over 20 favourite points in this area to talk about their caches and had several expressions of interest before setting up this meet. Examples of what are on offer are:

  • The owner of the NOSE trail in East London, anytar, who dreamt up GC8CGB6, NOSE: Bazalgette's Cathedral with 23 fav points and many other imaginative themed caches has offered to show participants how to make a cache
  • I, together with my daughter, have been adding to the caches around Epping to emphasise and imrprove the GeoArt heart that was partially in place. The new caches are themed. I will be bringing my 3-D pen that I use to customise these caches for people to see and maybe use (I can't promise everyone will get a go, it depends on the interest).
  • My daughter will be showing participants how to create STL files to make custom 3-D printed geocache containers.
  • I own GC9E8ZZ the Oak Trail: Bats cache with 11 fav points and am bringing ideas on how to customise caches to make them more interesting.
  • Another of my caches, GC9E8Q1 What have the Romans done for us? Wine, has been customised using a pyrography tool and I will be bringing that and wooden discs for people to create customised trackables. That series includes a series of field puzzles and I will be bringing some of the ideas used in the Roman Road caches.
  • Getting permission to place caches - several of the experienced cache owners present have placed caches on Epping Forest land.
  • What is GeoArt? How to set up a GeoArt trail.

This idea is partly inspired by the way another local cache owner and I have both upped our games in response to each others' caches (for example, one of us started creating GeoArt and the other improved on that idea). If someone else locally is placing good caches, then the incentive is to make our caches better.

Refreshments

Tea or coffee will be available, but there is no licence here. Please sign up to give me an idea for numbers, so I can organise refreshments.

After the meet, we could repair to a drinking establishment or take off to one of the more interesting local caches.

Access and Accessibility

The venue has good links to public transport. It is 10 minutes walk away from Epping Tube Station and there are buses from the tube station up Station Road to the church bus stop around the corner. The High Street is also on the bus routes from Waltham Cross, Ongar, Harlow and Shenfield. There is a paid car park almost directly opposite the venue.

The building has four shallow steps with a handrail up to the usual front door and level access to a different door. Please can you give me a heads up if you are a wheelchair user or have mobility issues so I can ensure the level access is open?
