Maker Magic: What makes a good cache?

Amersham Common Village Hall
24 White Lion Rd
Amersham
Buckinghamshire
HP7 9JD

Sunday 18th June 2023
11am to 1pm

What it is all about:
Feel free to come along to Amersham Common Village Hall to discuss what is involved in hiding a geocache. There'll be an opportunity to remind ourselves of some of the criteria to make a good cache, and discuss:

  • What makes a good location (or what isn't), and to consider the most suitable container type and size that can best fit that specific location.
  • How to set up a cache page. Wi-Fi is availlable at the venue to discuss how to utilise all aspects of setting it up (including images, backgrounds, font size, etc).
  • There will be an opportunity to look at a range of geocache containers, There will be a limited range of my pre-prepared containers, but feel free to bring some of your own containers for discussdiscussio

This event is part of the set of events that encouraged geocachers across the globe to find out about quality caches and how to hide them. By attending a Magic Maker Event, attendees will automatically earn a souvenir. For further details, please read about it here.

There will also be an opportunity to create your own geocache container. Feel free to bring your own tools, materials and/or a range of interesting containers and utilise this time to work with others to create something simply magical. Limited tools will be available but please do bring along any that you may have to use or share with others. If you have a flash of inspiration for a new container or you've not quite got the right tool, there is a tool shop and a plumbing centre nearby across the road in the industrial centre.

We will have access to the larger hall, where I will have set up chairs and tables for us to sit and chat. Hopefully I'll be able to have a separate area for the use of electrical tools if they are required - please be mindful around others, especially children. This may be the rear hall if we have a large number of attendees. Hopefully I can have a table or two outside for those of you who wish to stay outside (weather dependant).

But it's Father's Day, you say! Bring them along!.Or, if you're Dad, bring the young ones along too! The more the merrier. What could be better qualty time with them than making things out of plastic and wood? Children and pets are very welcome.

Food and drinks:
Tea, coffee, cake and biscuits will be available in the self-service kitchen. We also have access to the electric ovens and microwave, so if you'd like to prepare something whilst you're here, feel free to do so. Utensils are also available (I would just politely ask that you clean up after yourselves).

Public transport
Unfortunately there aren't any buses along here on a Sunday. The venue is directly between Amersham Station and Chalfont & Latimer Station, which have been added to the waypoints.

Parking:
The hall does have a small car park for 20 or so cars, including 2 spaces for disabled drivers. Additional parking can be found across the road in the Industrial Estate. I recommend using this one if you are able to walk a little further than some of our less able attendees. Please cross the road carefully, there is a crossing point nearby.

Please post a will attend so that I know how many tables and chairs to put out before the official start time. Please add whether you plan to use the kitchen for any cooking, and which tools you'll bring along, if any.

This is a Maker Magic event, a celebration of creative cache hides that may inspire you to create a wonderful cache of your own. When you write you Attended log, you will earn the Maker Magic souvenir. You can read more information about the souvenir on the geocaching blog.
