The small community, which had a population of less than 100 people, lost an entire generation when these men were killed during a 12-month period from February 1944 to February 1945.
The monument is carved from sunset pink granite, the same from which the Capitol was constructed, and includes the names and military affiliations of each soldier and the circumstances surrounding each man's death.
