Freguesia do Caniço/ Parish of Caniço
O Caniço é uma cidade e freguesia portuguesa do concelho de Santa Cruz, na ilha da Madeira. Tem 12 km2; de área, 23 368 habitantes (2011) e uma densidade populacional de 1 947,3 hab/km2;. Localiza-se a uma latitude de 32.633 (32°38') Norte e a uma longitude de 16.85 (16°51') Oeste. É banhada pelo Oceano Atlântico a sul e é montanhoso a norte. Foi elevado à categoria vila a 19 de abril de 2000 e a cidade a 10 de junho de 2005. A denominação da povoação vem do nome dado à planta Phragmites communis, vulgarmente chamada de carriço ou caniço, que existia abundantemente na zona à altura da descoberta da ilha da Madeira.
Caniço is a Portuguese town and parish in the municipality of Santa Cruz, on the island of Madeira. It has an area of 12 km2;, 23,368 inhabitants (2011) and a population density of 1,947.3 inhabitants/km2;. It is located at a latitude of 32.633 (32°38') North and a longitude of 16.85 (16°51') West. It is bathed by the Atlantic Ocean to the south and is mountainous to the north. It was elevated to town status on April 19, 2000 and city status on June 10, 2005. The name of the village comes from the name given to the plant Phragmites communis, commonly called carriço or caniço, which existed abundantly in the area at the time of discovery. from the island of Madeira.
