Começou por se chamar "Torre Salazar". Após o 25 de Abril a sua designação passou para "Torre da Paz".
Mas na aldeia, até à intervenção de requalificação que recebeu em 2002, era meramente identificada por "Torre do relógio". Agora assume a sua singularidade porque, neste mundo, torres para promover a paz devem ser raras. Classificado como Imóvel de Interesse Municipal, é um edifício de planta quadrada com três metros de lado e 11 metros de altura. Na parte superior duas ventanas servem para alojar os seus dois sinos. A cúpula é em granito. Foi construída, em 1945, por iniciativa de Mário Mathias, um "ilustre benfeitense", com um objectivo porventura único no mundo: o de anunciar e celebrar o fim da II Guerra Mundial, tocando o seu sino. Foi o que sucedeu às 14h do dia 07 de Maio de 1945.
O SINO DA PAZ
O denominado “Sino da Paz” possui a seguinte inscrição "MANDOU FAZER DR. MÁRIO MATHIAS NO ANO DE 1945". Foi fabricado em Almada na firma "Manoel F. Couzinha". Pesa 6 kg e foi colocado na Torre da Paz em Abril de 1945. O seu destino ficou nele gravado sob a forma de uma inscrição: "ESTE SINO TOCOU PELA PRIMEIRA VEZ A ANUNCIAR O FIM DA GUERRA DA EUROPA EM 1945".
O RELÓGIO
É uma máquina, no seu todo, extraordinária. Várias peças do mecanismo exibem frases que enaltecem a Paz. Numa está gravado “BENDIGAMOS A PAZ”. Noutra “A PAZ SEJA COMNOSCO”. Construído por Manuel Francisco Cousinha, natural de Pomares - freguesia próxima de Benfeita - afamado relojoeiro da época, proprietário da casa "A BOA CONSTRUTORA", localizada em Almada.
O POVO DA BENFEITA SOUBE PRIMEIRO
Em 1945 o desfecho da guerra estava decidido. Todos esperavam o dia da rendição nazi, mas na aldeia e para todos os que a ela estavam ligados, a esse desejo juntava-se a ânsia de a torre e o sino cumprirem o seu objectivo. Nesta cumplicidade colectiva, um funcionário duma empresa inglesa, marido duma habitante da aldeia, soube da assinatura do armistício e logo telefonou para a Benfeita a dar a boa nova. Badaladas ecoaram por estes montes e vales e de imediato todos ficaram a saber que a Paz chegara.

It began life under the name “Salazar Tower”. After 25 April 1974 it changed its name to “Peace Tower”. In the village, however, until its restoration in 2002, it was simply called the “Clock Tower”. It now has a certain uniqueness because towers promoting peace must surely be rare in this world. Classified as a Building of Municipal Interest, is built on a square plan three metres by three metres and is 11 metres high. In its upper part two openings house its two bells. The dome is granite.
THE BELL OF PEACE
The so-called “Bell of Peace” bears the following inscription “DR. MÁRIO MATHIAS ORDERED THIS TO BE MADE IN 1945”. It was cast in Almada by the firm “Manoel F. Couzinha”. It weighs 6 kg and was hung in the Peace Tower in April 1945. Their purpose was engraved on it in the following inscription: “THIS BELL RANG FOR THE FIRST TIME TO ANNOUNCE THE END OF THE WAR IN EUROPE IN 1945”.
THE CLOCK
The clock is, as a whole, an extraordinary piece of machinery. Several parts of the mechanism bear phrases that eulogise Peace. On one is engraved “LET US BLESS PEACE”. And on another “PEACE BE WITH US”. Constructed by Manuel Francisco Cousinha, a native of Pomares – the next-door parish to Benfeita – a famous clockmaker of the period and owner of the firm “A BOA CONSTRUTORA”, located in Almada.
THE PEOPLE OF BENFEITA KNEW FIRST
In 1945 the outcome of the war was decided. Everyone expected the day of the Nazi surrender, but in the village and for all those connected with it, this desire was joined by anxiety that the tower and the bell would fulfil their purpose. In this spirit of collusion, an employee of a British company, the husband of a villager, learned of the signing of the armistice and immediately telephoned to Benfeita to impart the good news. Chimes echoed around these hills and valleys and immediately everybody knew that peace had arrived.
