CITO 2023 Season 1: The Dawber Garden

CITO ("Cache In, Trash Out") events are a chance for Geocachers to make a positive contribution to the effort of keeping our world beautiful, safe and as they should be. We often make use of this rich landscape as we hide and seek our caches but this gives us a chance to do more.

While many events are purely litter picking, today there are a number of tasks that need doing, so this is a different sort of CITO.

The John Dawber Garden

The Dawber garden was first developed around 40 years ago to celebrate the life and work of the famous Lincolnshire botanist, Sir Joseph Banks, who travelled with Captain Cook. The walled garden also marks Lincoln’s relationships with twin cities Tangshan in China and Neustadt in Germany. As well as a sensory area, the garden also features a ‘Moon Gate’, a Chinese symbol of friendship.

The garden, which belongs to the City Council, is now leased to the newly-formed Dawber Garden Community Trust which is making plans to restore and rejuvenate the garden for public enjoyment. Planned work includes a major restoration of the pond area, replacement of the paths and a programme of replanting. But there are many other tasks that need completing and the trust is keen to get volunteers involved, hence today's event!

Today's Activities

Today's event includes the opportunity to contribute in the following ways:

  • Ivy clearance (please bring gloves and secateurs
  • Litter picking- bring gloves and a litter picker, if you have one
  • Weeding

(Details of any further tasks to be tackled on the day will be announced nearer the time)

Please could everyone please come equipped with the following:

  • Suitable footwear and clothing
  • Gloves
  • Secateurs
  • A drink or snack and your lunch!

I will provide:

  • Bin liners for litter picking
  • Antibacterial hand gel

Children are welcome to take part but should be supervised by a responsible adult AT ALL TIMES. Dogs are welcome too but should be kept on a lead. Everyone takes part at their own risk, although accidents and incidents are unlikely if we're careful and sensible. There is a log book to sign if you wish.

An official Groundspeak CITO Season 1 souvenir will be added to your profile automatically once you log that you have attended this event. (Unless you've already earned it at another event!) Please don't just show up to get the souvenir. We actually need your help!
