Geocache Description:

06 December 2022, 18:00 - 20:00

Welcome to the

Frederick Puzzler's Corner!

This is a monthly event to encourage puzzle solving in the geocaching community.

If you have a specific puzzle or puzzling topic you'd like help with, feel free to make note of it in your Will Attend log so others can prepare to help.

On this date in:

1790 -  The U.S. congress moves from New York City to Philadelphia.

1877 - Thomas Edison exhibits the phonograph.

1923 - President Calvin Coolidge holds the first presidential address to be broadcast on radio.

1964 - "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer" airs on television for the first time.

And for some history - today is St. Nicholas' Feast Day.  A 4th-century bishop of Myra (in ancient Lycia, now southwest Turkey), St. Nicholas is the patron saint of Russia and Greece, of a number of cities, and of sailors and children, among many other groups, and was noted for his generosity.

After the Reformation, which ended about the turn of the 17th century, St. Nicholas was largely forgotten in Protestant Europe, although his memory was kept alive in Holland as Sinterklaas. There St. Nicholas is said to arrive on horseback on his feast day, dressed in a bishop’s red robe and mitre and accompanied by Black Peter (Zwarte Piet), variously described as a freed slave or a Moor, to help him distribute sweets and presents to good children or lumps of coal, potatoes, or switches to bad ones. The Dutch took the tradition to New Amsterdam (now New York City) in the American colonies, where he was transformed into Santa Claus by the English-speaking majority. His legend of a kindly old man was united with old Nordic folktales of a magician who punished naughty children and rewarded good children with presents. The resulting image of Santa Claus in the United States crystallized in the 19th century, and he has ever since remained the patron of the gift-giving festival of Christmas. In Britain he was largely replaced with Father Christmas.

Here's the usual spiel…

This event is open to all geocachers, no matter what your statistics say or whether you even like puzzles!  Newbies and addicts, socialites and lone wolves, mark your calendar.

If you've got a puzzle or mystery cache that's currently got you stumped, this event is for you!

This is an unstructured think-tank assembly where you can collaborate on the latest tantalizing quizzler on your radar.  But you don't have to work on puzzles to attend; there are always good stories and conversations all around.  However, you'll have plenty of others to bounce ideas around with, and you might discover that someone has seen a similar technique before.  We continue to see successes and progress at each gathering.

For the puzzle junkies, bring your puzzle paraphernalia - flagged caches, laptop or tablet (Wi-Fi is available), theories, library card, worksheets, (sp)eye glasses, flight plans, Enigma machine, abacus, scratch paper (don’t forget your writing instrument) - you never know who, or what, will show up, and from whom you can gain an advantage.  It's fun, too, to watch others' wheels spinning on something you may have already solved!
