Het Damrak
Het Damrak is een van de drukste straten van Amsterdam. De meeste winkels en horeca aan het Damrak zijn gericht op de vele toeristen die Amsterdam bezoeken.
Het Damrak is vanaf rond het jaar 1400 bebouwd geweest. Het was een lange tijd een deel van de haven van Amsterdam en daarbij hoorden natuurlijk pakhuizen, winkels, woonhuizen, werkplaatsen en herbergen.
Met deze multicache bekijken we het Damrak zoals het er rond het jaar 1900 uit zag.
Er werd in die tijd flink gebouwd. Oude pandjes werden gesloopt om plaats te maken voor nieuwe gebouwen. Kantoren, winkels en woningen. Het was de tijd van de Jugendstil, Art Nouveau of op zijn Nederlands de Nieuwe Kunst. Deze kunststroming had ook veel invloed op de bouwkunst en dus op de nieuwe gebouwen op het Damrak.
De multicache laat je een aantal gebouwen zien die rond 1900 zijn gebouwd. Kijk vooral goed omhoog want er is veel te zien aan de gebouwen waar je langs loopt. Het rondje startpunt-cache-startpunt is minder dan 900 meter.

Op de boven aan de pagina vermelde coördinaten heb je een mooi uitzicht op het Damrak. Hier staat ook een lantaarnpaal. Op de lantaarnpaal zit een zilvergrijze sticker geplakt met daarop elf cijfers. De eerste zes cijfers zijn 206973. De laatste vijf cijfers zijn ABCDE.
Voor het bepalen van de cachecoördinaten, N52 22.UVW E004 53.XYZ moet je langs nog vijf waypoints om een aantal vragen te beantwoorden. Je hebt voor het bepalen van de coördinaten ook de cijfers ABCD en E nodig.
Waypoint 2, Damrak 19
De gevel van dit pand is uit 1899. Het pand zelf is al veel ouder.
Bekijk de kozijnen en de daklijst. Je ziet veel gebogen lijnen. In de Art Nouveau stijl zijn gevels, balkons en kozijnen allesbehalve rechttoe rechtaan.
Het tweehonderd jaar eerder gebouwde pand rechts naast nummer 19 is nu een tempel. Wat is de naam van die tempel?

Waypoint 3, Damrak 21-22
De twee huisjes met halsgevels links naast nummer 19, zie vorige foto, moesten in 1901 plaats maken voor een groot winkelhuis met bovenwoning en kantoren. Ook hier zie je veel gebogen lijnen bij de raamkozijnen.
In de Art Nouveau stijl wordt veel gebruik gemaakt van hoektorens, topgevels, dakkapellen, balkons en loggia's (inpandige balkons).
Bekijk de twee torens en het mooi smeedijzer van de balkonhekjes.

Waypoint 4, Damrak 28-30
Een groot en robuust gebouw dat je al van verre ziet staan. Gebouwd in 1904. De architecten hebben duidelijk naar de Amerikaanse bouwstijl in die tijd gekeken.
Voor het gebouw werden allerlei kostbare materialen gebruikt, zoals het groene Zweedse marmer aan de gevel. Het beeldhouwwerk is van Joseph Mendes da Costa.
Aan de twee gevels van het pand staan op voetstukken de beelden van Mendes da Costa. Hoeveel beelden, inclusief het beeld van het knielende figuur, staan er totaal op voetstukken?

Waypoint 5, Damrak 37-38
Het pand is in 1903 gebouwd. De gevel is uit natuursteen opgetrokken.
Inspiratiebron van de Art Nouveau is de planten en dierenwereld. Bekijk de twee aapjes bij de entree in de Oudebrugsteeg. Aan de Damrak kant vind je een mooi glas in lood raam tussen twee gebeeldhouwde gezichten.
Tussen het raamkozijn op de begane gond en de entree bevind zich een spleet in de muur. Welke tekst staat er boven die spleet?

Waypoint 6, Damrak 80-81
Het laatste gebouw van deze multicache is gebouwd in 1904. Veel gestileerde plantmotieven aan de gevel en een groot smeedijzeren hek bij de entree. De gevel is van hardsteen en zandsteen.
Op nummer 80-81 wordt nu koffie geschonken. Welke keten schenkt deze koffie?

The Damrak
Damrak is one of the busiest streets in Amsterdam. Most of the stores and restaurants are aimed at the many tourists who visit Amsterdam.
Damrak has been built on since around the year 1400. For a long time, it was part of the Amsterdam harbour and of course this included warehouses, houses, workshops and inns.
With this multicache we will see Damrak as it looked around 1900.
There was a lot of construction going on in those days. Old buildings were demolished to make way for new ones. Offices, stores and houses. It was the time of Jugendstil, Art Nouveau or in Dutch the Nieuwe Kunst. This art movement also had a great influence on the architecture and thus on the new buildings on Damrak.
The multicache shows you a number of buildings that were built around 1900. Be sure to look up because there is a lot to see in the buildings you walk past. The start point-cache-start point loop is less than 900 meters.
Waypoint 1, starting point of the multicache.
At the coordinates listed at the top of the page you have a nice view of Damrak. Here is also a lamppost. On a silver-grey sticker you will find two numbers with a total of eleven digits. The first six digits are 206973. The last five digits are ABCDE.
To determine the cache coordinates, N52 22.UVW E004 53.XYZ you have to pass five other waypoints to answer a number of questions. You also need the digits ABCD and E to determine the coordinates.
Waypoint 2, Damrak 19
The facade of this building dates from 1899. The building itself is much older.
Look at the window frames and the roof moulding. You see a lot of curved lines. In the Art Nouveau style, facades, balconies and windows are anything but straightforward.
The building to the right of number 19, built two hundred years earlier, is now a temple. What is the name of that temple?

Waypoint 3, Damrak 21-22
The two houses with neck gables to the left of number 19, see previous photo, had to make way in 1901 for a large store house with upstairs apartment and offices. Here too you see many curved lines at the window frames.
In the Art Nouveau style, much use is made of corner towers, gables, dormer windows, balconies and loggias (indoor balconies).

Waypoint 4, Damrak 28-30
A large and robust building that you can see from afar. Built in 1904. The architects have clearly looked at the American architectural style on the time.
All kinds of precious materials were used for the building, such as the green Swedish marble on the facade. The sculptures are by Joseph Mendes da Costa.
On the two facades of the building are on pedestals the statues made by Mendes da Costa. How many statues, including the statue of the kneeling figure, are there in total on pedestals?

The building was built in 1903. The facade is made of natural stone.
The source of inspiration for Art Nouveau is the plant and animal world. Check out the two monkeys at the entrance in the Oudebrugsteeg. On Damrak side you will find a beautiful stained glass window between the two sculpted faces.
Between the window frame on the ground floor and the entrance there is a slit in de wall. What text is written above that slit?

Waypoint 6, Damrak 80-81
The last building of this multicache was built in 1904. With many stylized plant motifs on the facade and a large wrought iron gate at the entrance. The facade is of hard stone and sandstone.

The cache location
At the cache location, the GPS can give some deviations. Therefore, look for the white tie-wrap at the bottom of the fence. The magnetic cache is located 30 cm above the "fietsen". BYOP
