He was also known for many notorious exploits of absconding with other peoples’s money as well.
He had arrived in Asheville just a week before his death from Newport News, Virginia,
after being advised that the cool mountain air might provide respite for his consumptive symptoms.
After he died presumably from pulmonary tuberculosis, he was embalmed by one of the best Asheville embalmers of the early 1900’s.
His body was not identified or claimed until later.
He was then dressed up and paraded around Asheville in a carriage to advertise the funeral parlor’s business, or purportedly propped up to play poker games.
Mostly he was stood on a pedestal in the establishment.
