Em meados do século XVI, os freires da Ordem Militar de Nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo, vulgarmente chamados de Tomar, resolveram criar um convento da sua Ordem em Coimbra, e nele um Colégio universitário. A 6 de maio de 1566, iniciaram-se as primeiras obras de construção, terminadas decorridos cento e quarenta e sete anos. Extinto em 1834, o edifício ficou exposto ao abandono e vandalismo (é o único dos vinte e três Colégios universitários, de que nada resta, a não serem umas relíquias de baixo valor, que se encontram no Museu de Machado de Castro, em Coimbra). Na posse do governo, foi integralmente demolido e no seu lugar foi mandada construir a penitenciária, em 1873. Ao abrigo da carta de Lei de 1888, é criada a Cadeia Penitenciária de Coimbra, destinada a reclusos condenados a penas superiores a dois anos e delinquentes de "Difícil Correção".
Atualmente designado de Estabelecimento Prisional de Coimbra, é um estabelecimento fechado, de construção celular, obedecendo a disposições arquitetónicas que o inserem nos chamados estabelecimentos "em estrela" ou, de forma mais precisa, no sistema de Filadélfia, que permite uma maior facilidade de vigilância graças à sua configuração (Sistema Panóptico de Bentham).
O edifício central representa um octógono, no qual os seus lados correspondem às oito alas existentes (A a H), com celas dispostas umas em frente das outras, em vários pisos. Na ala A insere-se a escola, serviços médicos e os gabinetes de atendimento aos reclusos. Nas restantes encontram-se as celas, que em número variam entre 2 e 163. Na cave, localizam-se as celas disciplinares. Todas as alas têm corredores que convergem para as torres centrais, local onde é possível observar e vigiar todas as alas. O Estabelecimento inclui também um edifício anexo dedicado ao corpo de guarda, a antiga casa de função do diretor e o parque oficinal.
À data de 2016, a população prisional compreendia 498 indivíduos do género masculino, dos quais 393 em medida privativa de liberdade em regime comum, com penas de longa duração. Do total, cerca de metade são reincidentes.
O Estabelecimento está vocacionado para a aprendizagem de vários ofícios (marcenaria, carpintaria, serração, estofaria, encadernação, empalhadores, entalhadores, mecânica, polidores, sapataria e serralharia), bem como de cursos de formação profissional (instalação e reparação de computadores, reconhecimento, validação e certificação de competências, carpintaria de limpos e arruamentos e pavimentos). Adicionalmente, existem também os setores da agropecuária, alfaiataria, lavandaria, obras, sala de leitura, salão de vendas e secção elétrica.

Apesar de todas as medidas de segurança adotadas, um dos reclusos conseguiu fugir do Estabelecimento Prisional. Todas as pistas indicam que não terá fugido para longe, mas a polícia está a ter dificuldades em encontrá-lo. A vossa ajuda é fundamental. O recluso foi visto pela última vez nas coordenadas iniciais, a correr para norte.

A abertura e fecho do container deverá ser cuidada para evitar que se parta. As buscas devem ser discretas pois poderão existir muggles nas proximidades. Cache description:
In the 16th century, the friars of the Ordem Militar de Nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo, commonly known as the Ordem de Tomar, created a convent and a University College in Coimbra. On May 6th, 1566, the first construction works began, only to be completed one hundred and forty-seven years later. Extinct in 1834, the building was abandoned and vandalized (it is the only one out of twenty three University Colleges of which nothing remains, except some relics of low value, which are found at the Museum of Machado de Castro, in Coimbra). It was completely demolished by the order of the Government. The prison was later built in 1873. Under the Law of 1888, the prison was raised to Prison Establishment of Coimbra, intended for inmates with sentences of more than two years and delinquents of "Difficult Correction".
Currently designated by Prison Establishment of Coimbra, it is a closed facility of cellular construction, due to architectural provisions that are either inserted in the so-called "star" establishments or, more precisely, the Philadelphia system, which allows an increased surveillance due to its configuration (Bentham Panoptic System).
The central building represents an octagon, whose sides correspond to the eight existing wings (A to H), with cells arranged one in front of the other, on several floors. Wing A contains the school, medical services and the inmates' care offices. The remaing wings contain the cells, which vary in number between 2 and 163. In the basement, there are the disciplinary cells. All wings have corridors that converge to the central towers, where it is possible to observe and monitor all wings. The Establishment also includes an annex building dedicated to the guards, the former director's function house and the workshop park.
As of 2016, the prison population comprised 498 male individuals, of which 393 were in deprivation of liberty under a common regime, with long-term sentences. Of the total, about half are repeat offenders.
The Establishment is dedicated to the learning of various trades (carpentry, carpentry, sawing, upholstery, bookbinding, stuffers, carvers, mechanics, polishers, shoemaking and metalwork), as well as professional training courses (installation and repair of computers, reconnaissance, validation and certification of skills, clean carpentry and streets and floors). Additionally, there are also the sectors of agriculture, tailoring, laundry, works, reading room, sales hall and electrical section.
