Bij de eerste vuurbakens werd vrijwel uitsluitend hout als verbrandingsmateriaal gebruikt. Het was materiaal dat de natuur zelf leverde, waardoor het goedkoop was. Zonder een ingewikkelde inrichting kon het worden verwerkt. Een soort vuurkorf was voldoende. Het was al een grote vooruitgang hout te verbranden op een rooster in een in de toren gebouwde schacht, van waaruit de oplaaiende vlam omhoog sloeg. Stukken hout, brandbare afval van allerlei aard, vaak met teer doordrenkt, in korven van ijzeren stangen gemaakt, vlamden helder op. Bij donker weer was dit twee tot drie zeemijl zichtbaar; bij wind en storm ontwikkelde dit schijnsel zich ongunstiger. Het vuur werd dan afwisselend door de wind fel opgelaaid, dan weer inzinkend door de dikke rook gedeeltelijk verstikt, derhalve niet zo betrouwbaar! In 1834 werd begonnen met de bouw van de eerste stenen toren. Tegenwoordig heeft de vuurtoren van Haamstede een lichtbron van 5.000.000 kaarsen!

Die ersten Feuerbaken verwendeten fast ausschließlich Holz als Brennmaterial. Es war Material, das die Natur selbst lieferte, was es billig machte. Es konnte ohne komplizierte Ausrüstung verarbeitet werden.
Eine Art Feuerstelle war ausreichend. Es war schon ein großer Fortschritt, Holz auf einem Rost in einem im Turm eingebauten Schacht zu verbrennen, aus dem die lodernde Flamme nach oben stieg.
