O Poço das Asas é um local muito bonito. É uma pequena cascata no leito da Ribeira da Praia. Uma ribeira que termina no mar na Praia do Almoxarife. O nome do lugar vem de uma lenda.
A LENDA DO POÇO DAS ASAS
Há alguns anos, na Praia do Almoxarife, no lugar do Chão Frio, vivia a Adelina, uma formosa rapariga morena, de longos cabelos negros e olhos doces, castanhos, muito escuros.
A sua beleza cativara o jovem morgado António da Silveira que passava o Verão naquela freguesia. Um bonito amor desabrochou entre ambos, mas a diferença de classes sociais fazia com que se encontrassem apenas às escondidas, durante a noite, num lugar muito ameno, junto de uma gruta em cujo interior havia um poço de água cristalina todo rodeado de arvoredo.
Muitos rapazes do lugar pretendiam Adelina como noiva, mas ela sempre recusava os pedidos de namoro com uma desculpa ou outra.
Os ciúmes começaram a dominar o coração dos malogrados amantes que se puseram a seguir os passos da Adelina, até que descobriram os encontros nocturnos da jovem com o morgado.
Uma noite, Adelina, que já estava grávida de António da Silveira, saiu à sucapa de casa para junto do poço. Chegando ao lugar do encontro, sentou-se sobre a alta rocha que ficava por cima do poço e teve de ficar sozinha durante algum tempo porque o jovem morgado, por qualquer razão, ainda não tinha aparecido.
Cegos pelo ciúme, três dos pretendentes rejeitados por Adelina, ao vê-la ali desprotegida, à espera do amado, assassinaram-na, atirando-a depois para dentro do poço.
No dia seguinte de madrugada, quando as mulheres da povoação foram buscar água para gastar nos arranjos domésticos, encontraram o cadáver de Adelina, caído na água, rodeado de poderes de penas alvíssimas.
Dois dos assassinos fugiram, enquanto o terceiro, Ricardo, enlouqueceu de remorsos e ia sentar-se todos dias junto ao poço, olhando fixamente as águas, que muitas vezes apareciam cobertas de penas brancas. A quem passava Ricardo dizia que viessem ver as penas caídas das asas de um anjo e, acusando-se de seu crime, acrescentava que Adelina, quando fora morta, trazia no ventre um anjinho que, ao despedir-se da vida, tinha deixado cair algumas penas brancas das asas.
E foi devido a esta triste história que se passou a chamar àquele poço de água cristalina o Poço das Asas.

Poço das Asas (Well of the Wings) is a small waterfall in the riverbed of Ribeira da Praia. This riverbed runs down to the village of Praia do Almoxarife and ends there in the ocean. It is one of those hidden gems on Faial island. The name of the Poço comes from a legend.
The Legend of The Well of Wings (A Lenda do Poço das Asas)
Quite a few years ago, in Praia do Almoxarife, in the place called Chão Frio, lived Adelina, a beautiful girl, with long black hair and beautiful, very dark brown eyes.
Her beauty had captivated the young squire António da Silveira who spent the summer in that parish. A beautiful love blossomed between them, but the difference in social classes meant that they could only meet secretly, at night, in a beautiful hidden place, next to a cave which contained a well of crystal clear water, all surrounded by trees. Many local boys wanted Adelina as a bride, but she always turned down their dating requests with one excuse or another. Jealousy began to dominate the hearts of the rejected lovers who began to follow Adelina's footsteps, until they discovered the young woman's nocturnal encounters with the squire. One night, Adelina, who was already pregnant from António da Silveira, went out of the house to the well. Arriving at the meeting place, she sat on the high rock above the well and had to be alone for some time because the young squire, for whatever reason, had not yet appeared. Blinded by jealousy, three of the lovers, rejected by Adelina, seeing her there unprotected, waiting for her lover, murdered her, then threw her into the well.
At dawn the next day, the women of the village who went to the well to fetch water they needed for the household chores, found Adelina's corpse, lying in the water, surrounded by very white feathers.
Two of the assassins fled, while the third, Ricardo, went mad from remorse and went to sit every day by the well, staring at the waters, which were often covered with white feathers. Ricardo would say to anyone who passed by that they should come to see the feathers that had fallen from the wings of an angel and, accusing himself of his crime, he added that Adelina, when she was killed, had a little angel in her womb that, when saying goodbye to life, had dropped some white wing feathers.
And it was because of this sad story that this well of crystalline water was called Poço das Asas.
