A aldeia de Sortelha é considerada uma das mais bonitas de Portugal, além de uma das mais bem conservadas. Numa verdadeira viagem no tempo, Sortelha é um exemplo que o trabalho de conservação e recuperação nos anos noventa, pode ser um factor deveras diferenciador, para quem é apreciador da história de Portugal e pretende regressar às origens.
Sortelha mantém-se intacta no que respeita aos traços medievais das suas casas rurais em granito. Coroada por um castelo assente num conjunto rochoso a 760 metros de altitude, esta aldeia histórica faz parte dos encantos de Portugal. Quem chega a Sortelha, encontra uma aldeia feita de casas de pedra perfeitamente conservadas.
O seu nome deriva da configuração do terreno em rochedos escarpados que envolvem a aldeia em forma de um anel (sortija, em castelhano), tendo as muralhas sido erguidas também em forma circular.

Sortelha
The village of Sortelha is considered one of the most beautiful in Portugal, as well as one of the best preserved. In a true journey through time, Sortelha is an example that the conservation and restoration work in the nineties can be a truly differentiating factor, for those who appreciate the history of Portugal and want to return to their origins.
Sortelha remains intact with regard to the medieval features of its rural granite houses. Crowned by a castle based on a rocky set at 760 meters of altitude, this historic village is part of the charms of Portugal. Whoever arrives in Sortelha, finds a village made of perfectly preserved stone houses.
Its name derives from the configuration of the land in steep rocks that surround the village in the form of a ring (sortija, in Castilian), with the walls also being built in a circular shape.

Castelo
A entrada faz-se por uma porta gótica sobre a qual vê-se um balcão (Varanda de Pilatos), com aberturas (mata-cães) por onde se lançavam toda a espécie de projectéis contra os atacantes. Antes da entrada, merecem atenção um bonito pelourinho, rematado pela esfera armilar, símbolo de D. Manuel I e o edifício onde funcionaram os Paços do Concelho, ambos do tempo daquele rei.
Na igreja matriz, do séc. XIV, encontra-se um interessante trabalho do tecto hispano-árabe, e a talha dourada do altar-mor, acrescentada na época barroca.
O encanto desta aldeia reside na sua atmosfera medieval, onde as casas todas construídas em pedra de granito e geralmente de um só andar, se alicerçam na rocha e acompanham a topografia do terreno.

Castle
The entrance is made through a Gothic door on which you can see a balcony (Varanda de Pilatos), with openings (killers) through which all kinds of projectiles were launched against the attackers. Before the entrance, a beautiful pillory deserves attention, topped by the armillary sphere, symbol of D. Manuel I and the building that housed the Town Hall, both dating from that king's time.
In the mother church, from the century. XIV, there is an interesting work of the Hispano-Arabic ceiling, and the gilded carving of the main altar, added in the Baroque period.
The charm of this village lies in its medieval atmosphere, where the houses all built in granite stone and usually on one floor, are based on the rock and follow the topography of the land.

Cabeça da Velha
A Cabeça da Velha é uma atração que dispensa apresentações aos roteiros turísticos. Trata-se de uma curiosa formação granítica, que se localiza entre a Porta Nova e a terceira entrada para a vila de Sortelha, a Porta Falsa ou da Traição. Conta a história de uma senhora idosa de pedra a olhar para a Serra da Estrela, onde se encontra a Cabeça do Velho.

Old woman's head
Cabeça da Velha is an attraction that needs no introduction to tourist itineraries. It is a curious granite formation, which is located between Porta Nova and the third entrance to the village of Sortelha, Porta Falsa or da Traição. It tells the story of an old stone lady looking at Serra da Estrela, where Cabeça do Velho is located.

A pequena dimensão deste “reino do silêncio” não traduz o valor de Sortelha, das suas tradições seculares e dos seus habitantes hospitaleiros. Diz-se que “quem conhece, não esquece e volta” e o seu valor inegável faz dela uma das mais belas aldeias históricas de Portugal, com um elevado potencial histórico, cultural e paisagístico, que regista mais de 800 anos de história.
