The Church of St John The Baptist, Grimston.
The village of Grimston lies about half a mile south of the Saltway, a Roman road that connected Mountsorrel to Ermine Street. It is possible that Grimston lies on the site of a roman settlement. Following the establishment of the Mercian See at Repton in 656AD, missionaries spread across the area often using existing settlements as the basis of their Christian teaching.
The church itself is documented to have existed in 1162 so is likely to have been built in the early 12th century. Most of the church we see today is likely to have been developed in the 14th and 15th century until the suppression of the monasteries under Henry VIII.
The church is open daily between 10AM and 4PM. There is a very informative booklet in the church detailing its history and features, this is highly recommended!
