Let's meet for a hike and some geo-chatting!
The North Dakota Park & Recreation Department (NDPRD) has issued a statewide “12 months – 12 Hikes” challenge. To participate, just pick and hike one of the 20 qualifying trails. The trails are located in 12 participating state parks and you have a two-week period each month to complete a hike. You can complete your hikes all in one park or explore any of 12 locations across the state. If you miss a hike don’t worry there are bonus hikes to help you get in 12 hikes in 12 months, check the NDPR website.
The North Dakota GeocCahing Association (NDGCA) would like to help everyone complete the hiking challenge. To do this, we will be hosting an event in a different state park each month, so we can get together with other geocachers. Everyone is welcome, even if you have never found a geocache.
This hikes theme this month is “Blaze Orange Hike”, come dressed in your Blaze Orange if you have some. We will meet at the parking area near the trailhead. We will do introductions, chat a little, and then hike the Matah "River" Trail. This hike is about 2.9 miles long, but has a couple spots were we can loop back earlier if the weather is too much. This trail begins at the Visitor Center and loops around the park's main user areas. Along the river, interpretive signs describe the history, wildlife, and geology of the area. The MatahTrail Self Guided Loop is the innermost loop and brochures are available at the trainhead or Visitor Center. Check out the trail map in the event gallery.
We'll have a small snack and water following the hike, plus a couple giveaway items.
Remembers: A daily pass ($7) or annual ND state park pass ($35) is required to enter. We will follow current North Dakota State Covid-19 guidelines.
