Počátky historie Pražského hradu sahají až do poloviny 9. století, kdy se stal sídlem rodu Přemyslovců. Do počátku 14. století vyrostla v areálu Hradu řada paláců vládnoucích knížat a později českých králů a rovněž paláce biskupů a sakrální stavby, toto vše chráněno mohutným opevněním. Roku 1344 položil král Karel IV. základní kámen katedrály svatého Víta a povolal k její stavbě francouzského architekta Matyáše z Arasu, po jeho smrti mladého Petra Parléře (roku 1356).
Po poškození za husitských válek povstal Pražský hrad k nové slávě za panování Vladislava Jagellonského, který dal před rokem 1493 postavit veliký Vladislavský sál (62 x 16 metrů) s nádhernou klenbou (architekt Benedikt Ried), první stavbu s renesančními prvky v Čechách. Dalšího rozkvětu doznal Hrad za panování císaře Rudolfa II. V letech 1753 až 1775 byl Pražský hrad z rozhodnutí Marie Terezie přestavěn a to podle projektu vídeňského dvorního architekta Niccoly Pacassiho. Dílo vedl stavitel Anselmo Lurago s Antonínem Kunzem, od roku 1765 pak Antonín Haffenecker. V dnešní době jsou historické objekty Pražského hradu ve správě Kanceláře prezidenta republiky.
Prague Castle was most likely founded in around 880 by Prince Bořivoj of the Premyslid Dynasty (Přemyslovci). According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Prague Castle is the largest coherent castle complex in the world, with an area of almost 70,000 m². A UNESCO World Heritage site, it consists of a large-scale composition of palaces and ecclesiastical buildings of various architectural styles, from the remains of Romanesque-style buildings from the 10th century through Gothic modifications of the 14th century. The famous Slovenian architect Josip Plečnik was responsible for extensive renovations in the time of the First Republic (1918-1938). Since the Velvet Revolution, Prague Castle has undergone significant and ongoing repairs and reconstructions.
Katedrála svatého Víta, Václava a Vojtěcha a Panny Marie (často zkráceně, dle původního zasvěcení, jen katedrála svatého Víta či svatovítská katedrála) je nejvýznamnější český římskokatolický kostel a dominanta Pražského hradu. Jižní věž katedrály je s výškou 96,6 m třetí nejvyšší kostelní věží v Česku.
The Cathedral of St. Vitus, St. Wenceslas, and St. Adalbert (St. Vitus Cathedral for short) located in the Prague Castle is the most important ecclesiastical building in the Czech Republic and former Bohemian kingdom.
Its construction started during the reign of Charles IV. Growing up in France, Charles was surrounded by magnificent French cathedrals and later decided to build one for his hometown of Prague. Two architects, Mathew of Arras and Peter Parler, worked on the construction under his rule, but with a new king, Charles's son Wenceslas IV, all plans had to be stopped. Hussite War broke out in 1419, and the Cathedral stood unfinished for almost 600 years! Finally, in 1929 the cathedral was opened to the public and became not only a religious center, but also an important part of Czech national heritage. St. Vitus Cathedral is opened to the public with the exception of the masses.
