Geocache Description:

12 September 2021, 14:30 - 15:00

Come and celebrate Scotland's Geology! The Scottish Geology Festival is running from 1st September - 17th October, with a range of online, indoor, and outdoor events. This geocaching event will run alongside the Scottish Geology Trust's free Spey Bay Beach Pebble Event. You are not required to interact with that separate event, but if you choose to do so, geologists will be on hand to help you decipher the intricate geological stories that beach pebbles can tell.

Spey Bay’s pebbles are brought to the coast not just from the River Spey but from all around the Moray and Banffshire coasts by longshore drift currents, and by ice movement during the ice ages. This creates a wonderful mix of all rock types, and even some crystals. The beach is a steep shingle bank (wear sturdy shoes!) extending into the north sea.

If looking at rocks isn't your cup of tea, the area is a wildlife haven and the event will take place just outside the WDC Scottish Dolphin Centre; wildlife highlights you have a good chance of spotting include osprey and bottlenose dolphins.

This is den sure kalkun's first Aberdeenshire event, having moved here in July. One half of den sure kalkun is a geologist, so even if you only come to the Geocaching event, you may find yourself hearing about why gneiss is better than quartzite, and how you can tell sandstone breccia and porphyry apart.
