Geocache Description:

#Trilhos com história #2

Cache: Torre de Aires

Situada em Luz de Tavira.

A data provável de edificação da torre (COUTINHO, 1997) terá sido Séc. 8 a 13, originalmente integrada num sistema utilizado para monitorizar a costa;

Finais de Séc. 16 terá passado a ser conhecida como Torre de Aires (ou de Aires Gonçalves) por associação ao proprietário dos terrenos onde se implantava e da vizinha Quinta das Antas, propriedade de Aires Gonçalves (ANICA, 1991), indivíduo que ainda vivia em 1617 (SANTOS, 2012);

1758 - o pároco Vicente Nunes Leal informa que haviam existido no território da freguesia de Nossa senhora da Luz (Luz de Tavira) um total de "seis torres feitas à antiga, com muita altura", mas que, dessas, somente restava uma, denominada Torre de Aires Gonçalves, uma vez que três delas se haviam desmoronado em consequência do terramoto de 1 de Novembro de 1755 e de outras duas apenas restavam já vestígios; o pároco afirma ainda que a Torre de Aires se encontrava "com alguma diminuição por ter sido cortada" (OLIVEIRA, 1991);

1996 - consolidação e reconstrução de parte da estrutura da torre que se encontrava parcialmente derrubada e em perigo de ruir por completo;

#Sites with history #2

Cache: Tower of Aires

Located in Luz de Tavira.

The probable date of construction of the tower (COUTINHO, 1997) will have been the 8th to the 13th centuries, originally integrated in a system used to monitor the coast;

At the end of the 16th century, it became known as Torre de Aires (or Aires Gonçalves) by association with the owner of the land where it was located and with the neighboring Quinta das Antas, owned by Aires Gonçalves (ANICA, 1991), an individual who still lived in 1617 (SANTOS, 2012);

1758 - the parish priest Vicente Nunes Leal informs that there had been in the territory of the parish of Nossa Senhora da Luz (Luz de Tavira) a total of "six towers built in the old way, with a lot of height", but that, of these, only one remained, called Torre de Aires Gonçalves, since three of them had collapsed as a result of the earthquake of November 1, 1755, and of the other two there were only traces left; the parish priest also states that the Torre de Aires was "with some reduction due to having been cut" (OLIVEIRA, 1991);

1996 - consolidation and reconstruction of part of the tower structure that was partially demolished and in danger of collapsing completely;

2008 - Landscaping of the area surrounding the tower and the so-called Torre de Aires waterfront.

These towers served to warn the population, through light signals (at night) or smoke columns (by day), about any enemy vessels that approached or touched land; for this reason, some of them would also be designated as almenaras, a word of Arabic origin that means lighthouse.
