About Wood Green Underground Station
Wood Green is a station on the Piccadilly line in Zone 3. The station opened on 19 September 1932 when the first section of the Cockfosters extension from Finsbury Park was opened.
This station, designed by Charles Holden, is a well-preserved example of the modernist house style Holden developed for London Transport in the 1930s. Since July 2011, the station has been a grade II listed building.
To the north of the station is a reversing siding, used for reversing northbound trains. Until the 1990s trains were regularly turned back here - trains now only reverse at Wood Green in times of service disruption.
On 16 March 1976, the station was the site of a Provisional IRA bombing, when a device exploded on an empty train as it prepared to enter the reversing siding. There was one passenger standing on the platform, who was injured by flying glass.
The National Rail station that is now called Alexandra Palace was formerly called Wood Green; it was renamed in 1984.
Ventilation panel
A series of ventilation grilles designed by Harold Stabler were installed at Wood Green, Turnpike Lane and Manor House when the stations were built in the early 1930s. The grilles depict a romanticised panorama of the neighbourhood.
Tiny Parks
A more recent feature of interest is the Tiny Parks which were installed in 2019 in the disused ticket offices. They were created by the Edible Bus Stop project and can also be found at St James’s Park, Kilburn Park and Belsize Park tube stations. The plants only need watering around once a month, and are chosen for their positive effect on air pollution.
