Tiki bars once were a thing. Then they weren’t. Now they are coming back.
Perhaps the first Tiki bar was created in Hollywood in 1933 by Ernest Gantt. It was named "Don the Beachcomber", and it was there that Gantt invented the Zombie cocktail - a mixture of fruit juices, liqueurs, and various rums that was so potent that patrons were allowed no more than two. Any more, and one would end up “like the walking dead”.
Gantt moved to Hawaii and opened another bar which became the archetypal Tiki bar - Waikiki Beach. The bar was located on the beach and designed to evoke the South Pacific, with palm trees, tiki masks on the walls, tiki torches outside, a garden hose that showered a gentle rain on the roof, and a myna bird that was trained to shout "Give me a beer, stupid!"
The other archetypal Tiki bar is Trader Vic's. This became a popular chain, but the first was created in Oakland, California, in 1936 by Victor Bergeron, and that’s where the quintessential tiki cocktail, the Mai Tai, was invented.
The original tiki bars flourished for about 30 years, and then fell out of vogue. But beginning in the 1990s, a new generation has been reviving Tiki bars.

You are the civic planner in a small town consisting of five neighborhoods, represented by the five colors in the map below. Five people come to you, one from each neighborhood, each wanting to open a Tiki bar in their neighborhood. But your town has strict rules concerning Tiki bar placement:
- A Tiki bar can’t be next to another Tiki bar, not even diagonally.
- Each neighborhood must have exactly one Tiki bar.
- There must be exactly one Tiki bar in each row and each column of the street grid.
