Background:
P: Acerca de 70 milhões de anos, devido ao encontro das
placa tectónicas Ibérica e Eurasiática, Monsanto de Lisboa nasceu
como um local para eu colocar uma cache para vocês encontrarem.
Muito mais recentemente, o Parque Florestal de Monsanto foi
criado em 1934 pelo então Ministro das Obras Públicas, Engenheiro
Duarte Pacheco, que deu seguimento a uma ideia e um desejo que data
de 1868 - A Arborização da Serra de Monsanto. Em 1938, na altura em
que Duarte Pacheco era também Presidente da Câmara de Lisboa, o
processo de Arborização e instalação de equipamentos foi
acelerada.
Inicialmente, foram usadas plantas dos viveiros dos serviços
florestais, tendo sido gradualmente criados outros viveiros para
produzir plantas definidas para projectos de arborização porque a
vegetação existente na altura, estava limitada a áreas de recreação
e a algumas oliveiras.
E: About 70 million years due to the encounter of Iberian
and Eurasian tectonic plates, Lisbon's Monsanto has born as a place
for me to create this cache and you to find it.
Much more recently, the Monsanto Forestry Park was created in
1934 by the then Minister of Public Works, Engineer Duarte Pacheco,
who provided the follow up to an idea and a desire that dates back
to 1868 - The Arborisation of the the Serra de Monsanto. In 1938,
at a time when Duarte Pacheco was also the Mayor of Lisbon, the
arborisation and instalation of equipment process was
accelerated.
Initially, plants from the forest service nurseries were used,
with municipal nurseries being gradually created to produce the
plants defined in the arborisation projects, because the vegetation
existing at that time was limited to the recreation areas and a
number of olives trees.

baseou aquele documento no trabalho de dois geólogos na década de
cinquenta: Zbyszewski, G and Jesus, A..
Esta cache e a inclusão de imagens digitalizadas do documento
referido acima e incluídas no contentor da cache, foram aprovadas
pela autoridade responsável por Monsanto, através de um email que
guardei.

The hunt:
P: Pode ir directamente para a cache e registar a sua
visita ou pode:
Começar no ponto 1, um local entre o Jumbo Alfragide e a N117 e
ir para o ponto 2 (uma ponte para peões) para ver um cone vulcânico
(na fig. 1, identificado como "Alto da Cabreira") o qual foi
responsável pela maior parte dos depósitos piroclasticos
encontrados. Hoje em dia, não pode ir até lá porque está fechado ao
público geral a não ser que queira pagar um bilhete ao Decathlon
para correr/praticar jogging o BTT. Alguns anos atrás, era usado
por adeptos do motocross.
Dirija-se até ao ponto 3 (entre na N117 em direcção a Algés,
tome a A5 para Lisboa e deixe a AE na saída 2 - Monsanto).
Estacione o carro/meio de transporte (mt) no parque e caminhe
através do viaduto sobre a A5 até ao ponto 4 para ver um depósito
natural de piroclastos - material sólido expelido pelos vulcões.
Por favor, tenha cuidado quando caminhar entre o estacionamento e o
ponto 4. É uma saída/entrada da AE e não há caminho pedestre!
Assegure-se é visto pelos automobilistas. Se os condutores
olharem para si de uma forma estranha, é porque, para eles, parece
um agente de trânsito disfarçado e com um estranho dispositivo na
mão...
Vá para o ponto 5, seguindo a track que descarregou e estacione
o carro/mt evitando prejudicar o fluxo de trânsito - que não
é muito nesta área. A partir daqui, vai caminhar (cerca de 510m) ou
andar de bicicleta. Veículos motorizados não são
permitidos.
Na estrada onde deixa o carro/mt verá que no sentido ascendente
é alcatroada, para veículos motorizados, e no sentido descendente
tem superfície de cor vermelha, apenas para correr/jogging, andar
de bicicleta, skate... o que desejar para melhorar a sua forma
física!
Depois de começar a andar em direcção à cache, começará a ouvir
pássaros cantando (chorando? Há uma AE perto...) e sinais de
escavações no chão, feitas por animais - Coelhos? Raposas?
Esquilos? (existe um colónia de esquilos em Monsanto, introduzidas
com sucesso alguns anos atrás. Eu vi um!).
De qualquer modo. está a caminhar numa velha estrada asfaltada.
Na primeira bifurcação, tome a esquerda. Na segunda bifurcação siga
em frente e na terceira bifurcação (adivinhou!) vire à direita. No
ponto 6 pode ver um dique (É um ponto de disjunção entre duas
placas tectónicas. Na fig. 1, está perto do local F e aqueles
linhas grossas significam fracturas na crosta terrestre! Não salte
nem abane muito!).
Se for interpelado pela Guarda Florestal, não se assuste.
Apresente-se e explique o que está a fazer. (mostre alguns
acessórios que o ligue ao Geocaching) e obterá um sorriso e um
"Esteja à vontade!" Aconteceu comigo! Monsanto é uma área muito
sensível - Eu contactei a Administração do Parque e disseram-me que
informariam a Guarda Florestal acerca do Geocaching.
Ponto 7. Vá à caça! O dique está entre você e a cache mas,
por favor, não vá em linha recta ou poderá destruir o dique - O
material não é muito consistente. Regresse pelo mesmo caminho,
cerca de 50 mts, até que veja um poste em cimento que suporta
alguns cabos e vire à esquerda. Agora é consigo e o seu GPSr.
Depois da caçada, há mais um vestígio vulcânico para ver. É uma
chaminé vulcânica.
Regresse ao seu carro/mt ou, se estiver de bicicleta, vá em
frente (Agora tem um mapa/folheto consigo para o ajudar. Pegou um,
não pegou?). Comece a subir e chegará ao ponto 8. Se for de
carro/mt siga a estrada alcatroada e chegará ao ultimo ponto. Uma
vez lá, outra vez, tenha cuidado a estacionar o seu veículo.
Aproxime-se do vestígio vulcânico e note a cor e textura da rocha.
É magma petrificado. O cone e a cratera desapareceram com a erosão
de milhões de anos! O material mais duro ficou lá para você o
observar.
...e é tudo. Espero que tenha gostado. Quando possível, tente
explorar Monsanto com a ajuda do folheto que ganhou e, se tiver
crianças, elas não compreenderão porque é que não vai até ao
"Parque Recreativo do Alto da Serafina". Mais uma vez, é
gratuito.
Se quiser explorar Monsanto de uma maneira mais profunda, pode
usar o Parque de Campismo de Monsanto, que está na orla
florestal.
E : You can go directly to the cache and log your visit
or you can:
Start at waypoint 1, a parking between Jumbo Alfragide and N117
and go to waypoint 2 (a pedestrian bridge) to see a volcanic cone
(In the Fig 1, identified as "Alto da Cabreira") wich was
responsabile for the most of the pyroclastic deposits found.
Nowadays, you can´t go there because it's closed to the public
unless you want to pay a ticket to Decathlon for running/jogging or
biking. Some years ago, it was a place used by motocross fans.
Go to waypoint 3 (take the N117 in direction to Algés, take A5
in direction to Lisboa and leave the highway at exit nr. 2 -
Monsanto). Park your car/mean of transportation (mot) in the park
and walk back, through a viaduct over A5 to waypoint 4 to see a
natural pyroclastic deposit - solid material expeled by volcanos.
Please be careful walking from the parking to waypoint 4. It's a
highway exit/entrance and there are no pedestrian track! Assure
you're always visible to the drivers!
If the drivers look at you in an strange way, that's because,
for them, you look like am undercover traffic agent with a strange
device in your hand...
Go to waypoint 5, following the track you download and park your
car/mot avoiding to disturb the flow of traffic -not too much in
this area. From here you can walk (about 510 mts) or bike.
Motorized vehicles are not allowed.
In the road where you leave the car/mot you'll see that the
ascending direction is black for motorized vehicles and the
descending direction is red, only for running, biking, skating...
whatever you wish to improve your shape!
After you start walking, in direction to the cache, you'll start
to hear birds singing (crying? There's a highway passing near...)
and signs of animal digging in the floor - Rabbit? Fox? Squirrels?
(there is a colony of squirrels in Monsanto, successsfuly
introduced some years ago. I saw one!).
However, you're walking in an old asfalt road. In the first
bifurcation, take left. In the second bifurcation follow in front
and in the third bifurcation (You guessed it!) take right. In
waypoint 6 you can see a dyke (It's a disjunction point between two
tectonic plates. In figure 1, you're near place F and that thick
lines means fractures on earth's surface! Don't jump or shake to
much!).
If you're interpelled by Forest Guards, don't panic. Introduce
yourself and explain what you're doing (show some material that
links you with Geocaching) and you'll get a smile and a - "Esteja à
vontade!" - make yourself comfortable! It happened with me!
Monsanto is a very sensitive area - I've already talked to the Park
Administration and they told me they'll inform the Forest Guards
about Geocaching.
Go to the hunt! Waypoint 7. The dyke is between you and the
cache but, please, don't go straight forward or you'll destroy the
dyke - The material is not very consistent. Turn back by the same
track, about 50 mts, until you see a concrete post supporting
cables and turn left. Now it's up to you and your GPSr.
After the hunt, there is one more vestige to see. It is a
volcanic chimney.
Came back to your car/mot or, if you're biking, follow in front
(now you have a map/leaflet to help you! You took one, didn't
you?). Start climbing and you'll reach waypoint 8. If taking your
car/mot, follow that black road in direction to the last waypoint.
Once there, again, be careful when parking your car/mot. Come close
to this volcanic vestige, watch the color and the texture of the
rock. It's petrified magma. The cone and the crater disappeared
with the erosion of millions years! The hardest material remained
for you to observe it.
... and that's all. I hope you enjoyed it. When possible, try to
explore Monsanto with the help of the leaflet you won and, if you
have kids with you they won't understand why you don't go to
"Parque Recreativo do Alto da Serafina". Again, it's free.
