Peace movement
For centuries violent wars had raged in Europe. Harvests were destroyed, houses were plundered, families torn apart. Society was unsettled time and again. The raw images of the battlefield that through the invention of photography now also reached the home front, did serious damage to the idea that war was essential for defending the glory of king and country. And so, in the course of the 19th century, the peace ideal blossomed as never before. The political tensions and resulting threat of war on the threshold of the 20th century only added to the popularity of the spreading peace movement. Throughout Europe and America peace organizations were founded, inspired by the ideas of famous writers and pacifists such as Leo Tolstoy, Bertha von Suttner and Alfred Nobel.
Peace Conferences
The initiative of Czar Nicholas II to organize an international peace conference came at exactly the right moment. During the First Hague Peace Conference of 1899, 26 countries came together to speak about disarmament and about the possibility of international jurisdiction, which led to the establishment of the Permanent Court of Arbitration. In 1907 a second peace conference was organized in The Hague, in which 44 countries participated.
Peace Palace
During this Second Peace Conference, the foundation stone of the Peace Palace was laid. The building was not only intended to house the Permanent Court of Arbitration, it was also supposed to house the largest library in the field of international law and peace. In the presence of the Dutch royal family, financier Andrew Carnegie and an international group of jurists, politicians and pacifists, the key to the Peace Palace was handed over on 28 August 1913.
In addition to the Permanent Court of Arbitration, the Peace Palace now houses the United Nations International Court of Justice, the Hague Academy of International Law and the Peace Palace Library. The Carnegie Foundation is the owner and manager of the Peace Palace.
In addition to providing a home for these various institutions, the Palace still embodies the decades-old dream of world peace and the Carnegie Foundation, on a daily basis, works towards a better world by convening, educating and inspiring people worldwide.

It is recommended to visit the cache by public transportation or by bike. If you visit by car, it is a paid parking area. Occasionaly parking places are available on the street. Otherwise there is a nearby parking garage Alexanderveld (see waypoint).
Vredesbeweging
Eeuwenlang werd Europa verscheurd door bloedige oorlogen. Oogsten werden verwoest, huizen geplunderd, families uiteengerukt. De samenleving raakte keer op keer ontregeld. De rauwe beelden van het strijdtoneel, die door de uitvinding van fotografie nu ook het thuisfront bereikten, deden afbreuk aan het idee dat oorlog onmisbaar was voor de glorie van vorst en vaderland. Zo kwam in de loop van de 19e eeuw het vredesideaal tot bloei als nooit tevoren. De politieke spanningen en daaruit voortvloeiende oorlogsdreiging op de drempel van de 20e eeuw, wakkerden de populariteit van de zich steeds wijder verspreidende vredesbeweging alleen nog maar aan. Overal in Europa en Amerika werden vredesorganisaties opgericht, die werden gevoed door de ideeën van bekende schrijvers en pacifisten als Leo Tolstoi, Bertha von Suttner en Alfred Nobel.
Vredesconferenties
Het initiatief van de Russische Tsaar Nicolaas II om een internationale vredesconferentie te beleggen kwam precies op het juiste moment. Tijdens de Eerste Haagse Vredesconferentie in 1899 kwamen 26 landen bijeen om te spreken over ontwapening en de mogelijkheid van internationale rechtspraak, wat leidde tot de oprichting van het Permanente Hof van Arbitrage. In 1907 werd er in Den Haag een tweede vredesconferentie georganiseerd waaraan 44 landen deelnamen.
Vredespaleis
Tijdens deze Tweede Vredesconferentie werd de eerste steen gelegd van het Vredespaleis. Het bouwwerk moest niet alleen dienen als onderkomen van het Permanent Hof van Arbitrage, het moest ook de grootste bibliotheek op het gebied van internationaal recht en vrede huisvesten. In aanwezigheid van de koninklijke familie, geldschieter Andrew Carnegie en een internationale groep rechtsgeleerden, politici en pacifisten, werd de sleutel van het Vredespaleis op 28 augustus 1913 officieel overhandigd.
Het Vredespaleis huisvest nu, naast het Permanent Hof van Arbitrage, ook het Internationaal Gerechtshof van de Verenigde Naties, de Haagse Academie voor Internationaal Recht en de Bibliotheek van het Vredespaleis. De Carnegie Stichting is de eigenaar en beheerder van het Vredespaleis.
Naast een onderkomen voor deze verschillende instellingen, belichaamt het paleis nog steeds de decennialang gekoesterde droom van de wereldvrede en werkt de Carnegie Stichting dagelijks aan een betere wereld door mensen wereldwijd bijeen te brengen, op te leiden en te inspireren.
