Vstup do Údolia smrti smerom od Svidníka už z diaľky označuje známy pamätník – tzv. Taran, ktorý tvoria dva do seba vklinené tanky. Ide o sovietsky stredný tank T-34/85, ktorý je symbolicky na vyššom podstavci s hlavňou namierenou na nižšie postavený nepriateľský nemecký stredný tank Panzerkampfwagen IV Ausf.J . 
Keď sa v roku 1944 – krátko po vypuknutí SNP – podarilo oddielom Sovietskeho zväzu posilneným o 1. čs. armádny zbor prekonať ťažko priechodný a urputne bránený horský terén Duklianskeho priesmyku, veľmi pomaly a s ťažkými stratami na životoch i technike postupovali k obci Kapišová. Práve tu, v údolí potoka Kapišovka – na rozbahnenom poli posiatom nepriateľskými mínami – sa strhla najväčšia a najkrvavejšia tanková bitka v dejinách Slovenska. Sychravé jesenné počasie, chmúrne zatiahnutá obloha osvetľovaná zúrivou paľbou z oboch strán frontu, krik mužov kladúcich životy za nádej na slobodu – to boli kulisy drámy, ktorá si vyžiadala desiatky tisícov mŕtvych a ranených, a ktorej jediným bezprostredným výsledkom (nakoľko pre porážku SNP na strednom Slovensku musela byť predčasne ukončená) bolo karmínovočervené zafarbenie potoka Kapišovka pretrvávajúce ešte viac ako týždeň. Jedinečnú atmosféru duklianskeho „Údolia smrti“ možno zažiť i dnes.

The entrance to the Valley of Death from Svidník from a distance is marked by a well-known monument - the so-called Taran, which consists of two wedged tanks. It is a Soviet medium tank T-34/85, which is symbolically on a higher pedestal with the barrel aimed at a lower enemy German medium tank Panzerkampfwagen IV Ausf.J.
When in 1944 - shortly after the outbreak of the SNP (Slovak National Uprising) - a section of the Soviet Army troops, strengthened by the 1st Czechoslovak army corps to overcome the difficult passage and fiercely defended mountain terrain of the Dukliansky pass, very slowly and with heavy losses of lives and machinery to the village of Kapišová. It was here, in the valley of the Kapišovka stream - on a muddy field littered with enemy mines - that the largest and bloodiest tank battle in the history of Slovakia took place. The dry autumn weather, the gloomy cloudy sky illuminated by fierce fire from both sides of the front, the cries of men who put their lives to hope - these were the backdrops of a drama that claimed tens of thousands of dead and wounded, the red color of the Kapišovka stream persisted for more than a week. The unique atmosphere of the Duklian "Death Valley" can be experienced even today.
