Aloha, this is the FIRST in a series of Historical Churches on Maui. We dedicate this series to Sister Myra and Brother Richard for their inspiration and guidance. Enjoy the caches.
St. Joseph's Catholic Church at Kaupo, Maui, Hawaii was established in 1862, Bishop Louis Maigret blessed the church on June 29, 1862. It served a thriving community of Ranchers, Fisherman and Farmers for over 100 years. The historically significant construction method of the period was such that it necessitated dedicated residents to dive into the ocean to collect coral to melt into cement in order to build the church. In time the congregation dwindled and the church fell into disrepair. In recent history much has been done to restore the church to its former glory. Please be respectful when you visit the site.
