Geocache Description:

Visit Arroyo Armijo details at the DGP

A beautiful hike up Arroyo Armijo leads to the cache. The walk to the cache has a very modest elevation gain, and is less than 2 miles. Armijo Trail is not well known, but is a very nice route through the lush forest of the Sandia Mountains.

Take the Crest Highway 1.6 miles to the turn-off for the Sulphur Springs Picnic Grounds. Immediately after turning off of the Highway, take the left turn toward Cienega Trail. (In the winter the gate to this road will be locked. Alternate parking to find the cache is just to the right at N 35 10.339',W 106 22.587'. Parking here adds about 0.5 miles to the beginning and to the end of your walk.)

Drive about 0.5 miles to a parking area at N 35 9.902, W 106 22.561. Walk toward the east from the parking lot, along the asphalt road blocked by several low posts, with the sign No Motor Vehicles.

After about 5 minutes you pass an old picnic area on your left. Notice the nice stone work along the side of the road. Just past this, the road makes a small loop. At the far end of the loop is a sign for Cienega Horse Bypass/Armijo Trail. Take the right fork, and continue down the path. After about 150 yards the path dead-ends at private property, marked by signs. 50 yards before the deadend is another brown signpole, pointing toward the right. The dirt trail skirts over the small ridge, and drops into a little valley.

You are now on Armijo Trail (Trail 222 on the Forest Service maps). This is a very nice trail that takes you up to Faulty Trail. At the junction of Armijo and Faulty, continue on Faulty Trail as it goes north. Faulty and Armijo Trails have been re-routed a bit since the cache was originally hidden, and you will make an arc toward the east on Faulty before getting closer again to the cache. You should be able to stay on Faulty Trail until you are within 100 feet or so of the cache, then go off-trail to make the find.

I hope that you enjoy the hike.
