It was a beautiful spring afternoon on Easter Sunday April 15, 2001. We asked each other what do you want to do? How about a walk in the park. Then Brian said “ I just read about this game that uses a GPS to find things. I already have a Garmin GPS III”. He then brought up geocaching.com, entered our new user name (byonke) which was part of Brian’s work email. He already had signed up for an account on March 6th. After scanning the list and the map we found a cache in Watkins Mill State Park (GC2AD) published on 2-15-01 and had 13 finds. We loaded the coordinates and off we went.
After driving into the park the GPS led us to the cache site area. The information on the cache page said it was a painted PVC pipe under a rotten log. We found it without any problems, opened it and signed our new geo name to the log sheet. We left a plastic Easter egg with a $2.00 bill inside for the next finder. (We didn’t continue that practice for long). We also encountered our first geo tick.
And the finds, friends, and fun continued for twenty years………………
Come join us anytime between 1:00 and 4:00PM to celebrate our twentieth geocaching anniversary. Enjoy a piece of anniversary cake and share some of your geocaching adventures. The event will be held in an open air shelter in the park.
We will probably still be under COVID restrictions and rules so we all know what they are by now. Wear your mask and let’s be safe.
Past tidbit: One day we were out looking for a cache and couldn’t locate it. We logged our DNF. The owner, one of our local cachers, wrote a nice note that if the godparents of geocaching in the KC area couldn’t find it he had better check on it. We so liked that title rather than caching grandma and grandpa. Thankyou.
Carlin, the better half of the byonke team.
