Grifo (Gyps fulvus)
Quando o sol já vai alto e os seus raios começam a aquecer a atmosfera, os grifos abandonam os seus poleiros e começam à procura das correntes térmicas ascendentes, para conseguirem subir.
O espectáculo de um bando de grifos formando um “balão” gigante enquanto se eleva no ar é um dos momentos mais
singulares na observação de abutres.
Identificação
Muito grande, maior que as águias. Voa grandes distâncias planando e quase sem bater as asas. A plumagem é acastanhada. Os “dedos” das asas são facilmente visíveis. Gregário, forma frequentemente bandos de algumas dezenas de aves.
Pode confundir-se com o abutre-preto, que por vezes se lhe associa, distinguindo- se desta espécie principalmente pelas tonalidades castanho-cremes das coberturas, pelo pescoço claro e pela extremidade das asas claramente revirada para cima.
Abundância e calendário
Em Portugal nidificam algumas centenas de casais de grifos, mas a sua distribuição é fortemente assimétrica. O grifo distribui-se sobretudo pela metade interior do território nacional, sendo mais comum junto à fronteira. As principais zonas de reprodução situam-se no nordeste transmontano, que alberga mais de metade da população portuguesa.
A espécie está presente no nosso país ao longo de todo o ano, mas efectua movimentos amplos fora da época de reprodução, surgindo então noutras zonas do território.

Identification
Very large, larger than eagles. Flies great distances gliding and almost without flapping its wings. The plumage is brownish. The "toes" of the wings are easily visible. Gregarious, it often forms flocks of a few dozen birds.
It can be confused with the Black Vulture, which is sometimes associated with it, being distinguished from this species mainly by the creamy brown tones of the covers, the light neck and the end of the wings clearly turned upwards.
Abundance and timing
A few hundred pairs of Griffon vultures nest in Portugal, but their distribution is strongly asymmetric. The griffon vulture is distributed mainly in the interior half of the national territory, being more common near the border. The main breeding areas are located in northeastern Transmontano, which is home to more than half of the Portuguese population.
The species is present in our country throughout the year, but makes extensive movements outside the breeding season, appearing in other areas of the territory.
