When I started out as a librarian I toiled with typing cards for the card catalog, processing books, determining how the collection would reflect the curriculum, numerous classes (students), and all the additional daily chores.
As the years progressed, my life involved many databases, research methods, and automating libraries. Nobody was writing their names on a check-out card (privacy!) and the computer made life much easier - or at least for most of us. I will not speak for those patrons who missed the card catalog with its many drawers.
Before you automate a library you have to go through your collection's shelf list cards and make sure ALL the necessary information is on them. The most important information is the ISBN number. Then you box up your cards and send them out to be processed. The barcodes came back and matched to the books they belonged on.
Anyway, you will be able to get coordinates if you can solve how these barcodes may help you. Best of luck!
