G4 (Gaithersburg Germantown Geocaching Gathering) Happy Groundhog Day!

Apparently we have the Celts, the Germans, and most recently, in 1887, Clymer Freas to thank for Groundhog day. Some might think that this is a silly holiday, but it has special meaning to me.

When I was growing up, our family had a tradition for Groundhog day. The night before Groundhog day my brothers and I would hang one mitten each from the knobs of my mom's desk drawers. The next morning the Groundhog would have left one item in each mitten. When we were kids, it would be a small toy like a matchbox car or the like. As we got older, it instead would be some useful little tool or handy gadget. Once I moved away from home, at some point following Groundhog Day (sometimes months later) a small package would arrive with something small in it and a very poorly written note (written left handed by my dad) saying "From Mr. G. Hog". My dad kept this tradition going for thirty-some-odd years, up until the year he died. Clymer Freas may have made Groundhog Day popular, but my dad made it special.

Whether the groundhog sees his shadow, doesn't see his shadow, or just decides to sleep in for another few months, come out to the Germantown Library and chat geocaching with us.
