FONTE DA BENCALADA
Ao longo da estrada entre a Ribeirinha e o Salão, logo acima da aldeia da Ribeirinha, encontra-se um chafariz que, desde tempo que vivo na ilha intrige me muito. Situada dentro uma beira da estrada íngreme, estava uma parede branca, ladeada por belas paredes de pedra. Tentei encontrar informações sobre a história desta fonte. Só encontrei o nome: Fonte da Bencalada.
E a seguir, em uma edição da “Tribuna das Ilhas” de 26-09-2020, a abertura de um local para os lavradores retirarem água pelos animais próximo ao reservatório da Fonte da Bencalada. O artigo referia-se aos danos causados à fonte durante o terramoto de 1998 e que a fonte foi restaurada ao seu propósito original: um bebedouro para o gado. A disponibilização de água ao público é o culminar dos investimentos realizados, mais especificamente na recuperação da canalização, vedação do reservatório e construção e montagem da bica de suporte e saída. O tanque tem capacidade para cerca de 70 toneladas e é abastecido pela nascente de Bencalada, localizada a montante. Para a zona envolvente da albufeira está prevista a criação de um miradouro e zona de lazer, aproveitando para o efeito as boas condições naturais do local, bem como a existência do percurso pedestre “Trilho das Nascentes”. De referir ainda que a bica de enchimento foi propositadamente posicionada a norte para afastar-se desta futura zona de lazer.
Infelizmente, ainda não encontrei mais informações sobre a história mais antiga da fonte.

FONTE DA BENCALADA
Alongside the road between Ribeirinha and Salão, just above the village of Ribeirinha lies a fountain that has intrigued me for as long as I live on the island. Tugged away in a steep roadside was a white wall, flanked by beautiful stone walls.
I tried to find information about the history of this fountain. The only thing I could find was its name: Fonte da Bencalada.
And then, in an issue of the paper “Tribuna das Ilhas” of 26-09-2020, the opening of a place for the farmers to collect water for their cattle next to the reservoir of the Fonte da Bencalada. The article referred to the damage that was done to the fountain during the earthquake of 1998 and that the fountain was now restored to its original purpose: a drinking place for cattle.
The availability of water to the public is the culmination of the investments that were made, more specifically in the recovery of the plumbing, sealing the reservoir and construction and assembly of the support and outlet nozzle. The tank has a capacity of about 70 tons and is supplied by the source of Bencalada, located upstream.
For the area surrounding the reservoir, the creation of a lookout and leisure area is planned, taking advantage of the good natural conditions of the place for this purpose, as well as the existence of the pedestrian trail “ Trail of the wells”. It should also be noted that the filling nozzle was purposefully placed to the north in order to be away from this future leisure area.
Unfortunately I still have not found more information on the older history of the fountain.
