FONTE DO VALADO
A Ribeirinha é uma freguesia do concelho da Horta com uma área de 12,26 km². Contém as localidades Canadinha, Chã da Cruz, Espalhafatos, Lomba dos Espalhafatos e Rua da Igreja.
A freguesia recebe o nome do pequeno ribeira e vale que foi ocupado durante o período de povoamento. Riberinha, em português, significa literalmente pequena "ribeira", devido à sua localização. Novos colonos construíram sua aldeia a dois quilômetros da costa, devido a várias incursões de piratas. Essa distância permitiu que os moradores monitorassem a costa e planejassem armadilhas para os invasores. Uma área, Poceirão dos Mouros, refere-se a uma dessas armadilhas onde os piratas (os mouros do Canal, como eram conhecidos) foram enredados.
Em 1643, segundo relata frei Diogo das Chagas, a freguesia era constituída por 71 casas e 254 habitantes. Um quarto de século depois, foi construída a Igreja de São Mateus da Ribeirinha, que permaneceria o centro da vida religiosa da freguesia até o violento terramoto de 9 de julho de 1998.
Situada perto da ribeira da Ribeirinha está a Fonte do Valado. Possuía tanque com 3 aberturas para extração de água: uma torneira, um poço que era conectado a um poço natural que brotava do interior da terra. Quando faltava água e não saía nada da torneira, havia esse poço e o cantonier que era responsável pelo poço tirava baldes de água do poço para dar às famílias dos assentados. O valor que recebiam era inerente à quantidade de membros da família.
Ao lado do poço havia um poço menor que fluía com menos frequência. As pessoas mais velhas disseram que a água desse poço menor era especial. Eles disseram que fluía através do ouro por causa de sua pureza e sabor
FONTE DO VALADO
Ribeirinha is a freguesia ("civil parish") in the municipality of Horta in an area of 12.26 km². It contains the localities Canadinha, Chã da Cruz, Espalhafatos, Lomba dos Espalhafatos and Rua da Igreja.
The parish receives its name from the small river and valley that was occupied during the period of settlement. Riberinha, in Portuguese, literally means small "ribeira", or small river-valley owing to its location. New settlers constructed their village two kilometers from the coast, due to several incursions by pirates. This distance allowed the inhabitants to monitor the coast and plan traps for the invaders. One area, Poceirão dos Mouros, refers to one of these traps where the pirates (the Moors of the Canal, as they were known) were ensnared.
In 1643, as recounted by friar Diogo das Chagas, the parish consisted of 71 homes and 254 inhabitants. A quarter of a century later, the Church of São Mateus da Ribeirinha was constructed, and would remain the center of religious life in the parish until the violent earthquake of July 9, 1998.
Situated near the Ribeirinha riverside is the Fonte do Valado (Fountain of the Ditch). It had tank with 3 openings to extract water: one tap, a well that was connected to a natural well that sprang from the interior of the earth. When there was a shortage of water and there was nothing coming out of the tap, there was this well and the cantonier who was responsible for the well took buckets of water from the well to give it to the families of the setteling. The amount they got was inherent to the amount of members of the household.
To the side of the well there was a smaller well that flowed less frequently. The older people said the water of this smaller well was special. They said it flowed through gold because of its purity and taste
