Geocache Description:

10 April 2021, 10:00 - 16:00

The date is set for April 10th, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm . Please post your intentions to attend and watch this event.  Updates will be made when needed. I have always worried about the weather cancelling our fun, but this year we also have covid-19 restrictions (posted at end of description).  What a year!

This is an annual event! For the last twelve years we've enjoyed a weekend camp out at the same site, but this year it is a day event only. Bring your own food to grill. We will have some veggies, individually wrapped chips and popcorn.

There is a ski lodge (warming hut) with a wood stove, and tables.  Outside there is a vault toilet, and tables. At this point, we will be setting up outside and will have hot chocolate, coffee, tea, and ill have the charcoal grills ready for grilling.  There are caches in the area,  and some great hiking or biking.

From the main campground on US Route 1, the cabin is about 2 miles along a snowmobile/multi-use trail. There is plenty of parking. After parking your car, hike or bike straight through the camping area until you see a multiuse trail on the left. The trail will immediately fork, the left fork goes up to Mt. Megunticook, stay to the right to get to the cabin. The trail will climb sharply the first 3/4 mile and pass a water tank and then is somewhat flat.  Bikes are allowed and the trail right to the cabin is a multi use trail.  Terrain is rated 4, based on spring conditions. It's a gradual climb  (a bit steeper at the beginning). If you have any questions about the difficulty, what to bring or how to prepare, let me know.

Cell phone reception is weak, but we are able to climb up a hill a bit and get some bars. It's a good idea to give me an approximate time that you will be arriving.

For the more adventurous, It's a 2.8 mile hike in from the road at Steven's Corner. . There is a large parking lot there. It's mostly uphill, but gradual, with some ups and downs.

Please note Covid Guidelines (April 7, 2021)

  • To attend, you must be a resident of Maine, an "allowed" state, or have a negative covid test within 72 hours of entering the state.
  • Masks are required, even though we are outside
  • Warming hut restrictions: only 5 people inside at a time, masks required. Warm up fast and then come back outside. We share this building with day hikers and bikers.
  • We will try to provide some seating outside and spread the seats out (it would be great if you could bring your own)
  • Hand sanitzer will be on site
  • Bring your own food to grill. We will have chips and some veggies.
