A diferença entre Jacaré, Crocodilo e Gavial

É comum ver as pessoas darem um único nome a estes três animais, chamando um jacaré de crocodilo e um crocodilo de jacaré.

O que elas não sabem é que o jacaré, o crocodilo e o gavial pertencem a três diferentes famílias: Alligatoridae, Crocodylidae e Gavialidae, respectivamente.

Se você olhar de perto (haja coragem!) irá notar que eles não são exatamente iguais. Cada um destes animais possui suas características peculiares que os diferencia um do outro.

Sabe dizer qual a diferença entre gavial, jacaré e crocodilo?

O jacaré apresenta um focinho largo e arredondado, já o crocodilo possui uma cabeça mais comprida e um focinho mais afunilado.

A maneira mais fácil de diferenciar estas duas espécies, porém, é pela observação da dentição.

Tanto o jacaré quanto o crocodilo possuem o 4º dente maxilar inferior mais proeminente que os outros, sendo que nos jacarés eles ficam escondidos em reentrâncias e só aparecem quando estes animais abrem a boca. Já nos crocodilos, eles ficam sempre expostos.

Além disso, os crocodilos possuem os dentes inferiores e superiores alinhados, ao passo que nos jacarés isso não ocorre.

Dentre as três espécies, o gavial é o que mais se diferencia e isto deve-se à forma da sua cabeça. O seu focinho é muito mais estreito que o dos jacarés e crocodilos, além de ser o mais longo entre os crocodilianos.

O seu focinho comprido e estreito torna o gavial inconfundível.

Curiosidade:

É muito provável que você nunca tenha se deparado com um gavial na sua vida, já que ele torna-se cada vez mais raro na natureza. Estudiosos estimam que existam aproximadamente 250 gaviais na natureza, classificando-os como em perigo crítico de extinção!

The difference between Alligator, Crocodile and Gavial

It is common to see people give these three animals a unique name, calling an alligator alligator and an alligator alligator.

What they don't know is that the alligator, the crocodile and the gavial belong to three different families: Alligatoridae, Crocodylidae and Gavialidae, respectively.

If you look closely (be brave!) You will notice that they are not exactly the same. Each of these animals has its own peculiar characteristics that differentiate them from each other.

Can you tell what is the difference between gavial, alligator and crocodile?

The alligator has a wide and rounded snout, while the crocodile has a longer head and a tapered snout.

The easiest way to differentiate these two species, however, is by observing the dentition.

Alligator snout is short and rounded

Both the alligator and the crocodile have the 4th lower jaw tooth more prominent than the others, and in alligators they are hidden in recesses and only appear when these animals open their mouths. In crocodiles, on the other hand, they are always exposed.

In addition, crocodiles have lower and upper teeth aligned, whereas in alligators this does not occur.

Among the three species, the gavial is the one that most differentiates and this is due to the shape of its head. Its snout is much narrower than that of alligators and crocodiles, in addition to being the longest among crocodilians.

Its long, narrow snout makes the gavial unmistakable.

Curiosity:

It is very likely that you have never encountered a gavial in your life, as it becomes increasingly rare in nature. Scholars estimate that there are approximately 250 gharials in nature, classifying them as in critical danger of extinction!
