Le chaos granitique des Pierres Jaumâtres
Le site des Pierres Jaumâtres, situé sur le Mont Barlot (591 m d’altitude), rassemble une forte concentration de blocs granitiques appelés aussi tors ou chaos granitiques.
Ces blocs se sont formés à la suite d’une altération chimique par les eaux (pluie, gel, dégel,...) qui se sont infiltrées le long des fissures du granite (diaclase) et qui peu à peu transforment certains minéraux du granite comme les feldpaths, le mica en argiles (hydrolysant). Cette altération produit une roche friable, composée de sables et d’argiles appelée arène.
L’eau en poursuivant son travail d’érosion fait disparaître l’arène granitique et laisse apparaître les blocs de granites entassés les uns sur les autres. L’érosion leur donne des formes arrondies, creuse des fissures ou crée des creux retenant l’eau.
Voici les questions pour valider cette earthcache :
- au WP de la earthcache, observez les blocs devant vous, décrivez-les et donnez le nom en terme géologique (vous pouvez vous aider du descriptif pour trouver le mot).
- au WP2, sur le panneau d’information sur le côté du chalet à proximité de l’entrée du site, expliquez avec vos mots la transformation du granite qui est représentée sur la deuxième image.
- une photo de vous ou de votre GPS ou d’un objet vous appartenant devant la pierre appelée Grenouille (vous aurez un belle vue sur Boussac) serait appréciée.

The granite chaos of the « Pierres Jaumâtres » (Jaumâtres Stones)
The « Pierres Jaumâtres » site, located on Mount Barlot (591 m above sea level), gathers a high concentration of granitic blocks also called tors or granitic chaos.
These blocks were formed following a chemical alteration by water (rain, freezing, thawing, ...) which infiltrated along the cracks of the granite (diaclase) and gradually transformed some minerals of the granite such as feldpars, mica into clays (hydrolysing). This alteration produces a friable rock composed of sands and clays called arena.
Water, while continuing its work of erosion, makes the granitic arena disappear and reveals the granite blocks piled on top of each other. Erosion gives them rounded shapes, digs cracks or creates water-retaining hollows.
Here are the questions to validate this earthcache :
- at the earthcache WP, observe the blocks in front of you, describe them and give the name in geological terms (you can use the description to find the word).
- In WP2, on the information board on the side of the cottage near the entrance to the site, explain in your own words the transformation of the granite shown in the second picture.
- a picture of you or your GPS or an object belonging to you in front of the stone called Frog « Grenouille » (you will have a nice view of Boussac) would be appreciated.
