Intoduction

Unique Geological Features of Taiwu Mountain

Kinmen surfaced one to two billion years ago due to the Yanshan and Himalayan plate movement, and is composed mostly of granite. Taiwu Mountain (253 meters high) amd Wuhu Mountain (127 meters high) are both formed by granite gneiss and gneiss, which are rarely seen in Taiwan. The south part of Taiwu Mountain is mostly granite gneiss, and the north side is large of granitic composition.

Now granite is mostly found in the continental crust of the Earth, The continental crust is the layer of granitic, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks which form the continents. Granite and granite gneiss are mostly found around the actual landmasses especially in North America. However, an island on the other side of the Pacific, just a mere two kilometers from mainland China, lies Kinmen, which has an abundance of granite and granite gneiss, which makes this a geologically unique place where you can observe an anomaly of rocks since the main island of Taiwan is mostly siltstone, basalt, shale, and limestone, but Kinmen takes on a whole new geological face.

In this Earth Cache you will visit a total of six places along the trail and based on your observations identify granite and gneiss and draw conclusions based on those observations, and try to figure out why this anomaly of rocks occurs here.

Rocks

Granite:

Granite is formed when magma is cooled deep in the earth's crust; uplifting and erosive forces then cause the granite to surface.

Granite Gneiss:

Granite gneiss is formed when granite is subjected to high pressure and heat (600 degrees Celsius and above), and is transformed into new types of minerals. The black and white sesame-like specs on the surface of granite gneiss are minerals. The white specks could be quartz, orthoclase, muscovite, etc. The black specks are mostly biotite.

Differences between Granite and Granite Gneiss

Composition

Granite is the kind of rock with the composition of feldspar and quartz while Gneiss has mica and quartz. Also, Granite is an igneous rock whereas Gneiss is a metamorphic rock.

Color

Granite is composed mainly of feldspar and quartz so these mineral compositions usually give granite a red, pink, gray, or white color with dark mineral grains visible throughout the rock. Gneiss, despite being composed of similar minerals as granite, due to its exposure to high temperatures and its classification as a metamorphic rock, its colors vary from alternating dark and light (white, pink or grey) bands.

Texture

Granite is coarse to very coarse-grained whereas Gneiss is is a medium- to coarse-grained.

Uses

Granite is used in buildings, bridges, paving, monuments, and many other exterior projects. Indoors, polished granite slabs and tiles are used in countertops, tile floors, stair treads and many other design elements. Gneiss is an ornamental stone and has many uses as a building material such as flooring, ornamental stones, gravestones, facing stones on buildings and work surfaces.

Logging Requirements

You will need to walk along the various trails of this mountain, visiting all six waypoints. As you arrive at each of the waypoints, you will come to various rock formations. In order to log this cache you must email me with the answers to the following:

1. Go to posted coordinates (Stage 1) and observe the rocks there. Based on your observations, are the rocks more likely to be Granite or Gneiss or a combination of both.

2. Go to Stages 2 through 6 and observe the rocks there and tell if the rocks are more likely to be Granite or Gneiss or a combination of both.

3. Based on your observations at each of the Stages, how did you come to your conclusions of which type of rock(s) was/were there?

4. At each of the waypoints visited, was there a bigger concentration of Granite Rocks or a bigger concentration of Gneiss, or was it even? How did you come to your conclusion?

5. After visiting all six waypoints and based on your observations and conclusions, why do you think some parts of the mountain had a bigger concentration of Granite Rocks and a smaller concentration of Gneiss Rocks or vice versa?

6. After visiting all six waypoints and based on your observations and conclusions, as well as what you learned from this cache page, what could be the cause of why Kinmen has such a high concentration of granite and/or granite gneiss?

7. (Optional) Post a picture of you (face can be blurred out) and your GPS at one of the Stages.

Please Note: Some parts along the trail require you climb up rocks and walk along trails where poisonous plants and various animals/insects may be present. Please stick to the main paths that have been laid out and pay attention to where you are sticking your hands. I hope you enjoy this Earth Cache and taking a walk through history!
