Up high on Buckden Pike there is a war memorial. It remembers the crew of a Wellington Bomber, Number N2848, who died on this hill in 1942. The crew were all Polish, and on the night of 30th / 31st January 1942, they took off from Bramcote airfield in Warwickshire. They were undertaking a night time cross country flight. Over Yorkshire, the bomber encountered heavy snow and reduced visibility, and hit the summit ridge of Buckden Pike, during which the tail of the bomber broke off. Initially two crewmen survived, and the tail gunner, Jozef Fusniak set off to get help and found a set of fox prints which led him to Cray. He was found by a Cray resident, Nanny Parker, who noticed a strange shape in the snow. Sadly by the time that help got to the wreck of the bomber all the crew were dead. In total, 5 crewmen died on this hill. They are all buired in Newark cemetery. The memorial looks out over the dales, take a time to remember those who died on this hill. Jozef went on to serve with another Wellington crew, and in July 1942, when on a bombing raid to Duisberg, he was the sole survivor when the plane he was in, was hit by flak, and exploded. He was captured by the Germans, and spend the rest of the war, a prisoner of war.
