As Lagoas do Tejo situam-se na margem direita do rio Tejo, imediatamente a Este das pesqueiras da Barreira, do Cantarrão, do Caracol, da Boavista e do Morouço Fundeiro.
Constituem estruturas cavadas em rochas metassedimentares por ação das correntes fluviais; a passagem da água do rio desgasta mais facilmente as faixas mais frágeis das referidas rochas, que normalmente correspondem às orientações das suas principais descontinuidades.
Para além disso, no leito do rio onde se encontram as lagoas parece ocorrer estruturas em forma circular nas zonas mais profundas, sugerindo que estas zonas sejam marmitas.
Associadas às lagoas existiam diversos pesqueiros, uma vez que quando as águas entravam nas lagoas elas teriam de voltar para trás, já que as lagoas eram fechadas na sua parte ocidental. Estas condições eram as ideais para uma pesca frutífera.
Na margem direita das lagoas, podem observar-se nos afloramentos do leito do rio diversas dobras que podem ser descritas e interpretadas de várias maneiras, para além de serem associadas às fases da orogenia Varisca.

The Tagus Lagoons are located on the right bank of the Tagus River, immediately to the east of the fisheries of Barreira, Cantarrão, Caracol, Boavista and Morouço Fundeiro.
They are structures dug in metasedimentary rocks by the action of river currents; the passage of the river water wears out more easily the fragile strips of the said rocks, which normally correspond to the orientations of its main discontinuities.
In addition, in the riverbed where the lagoons are found, circular shaped structures appear to occur in the deeper areas, suggesting that these areas are lunchboxes.
Associated with the lagoons, there were several fishing grounds, since when the waters entered the lagoons they would have to go back, since the lagoons were closed in their western part. These conditions were ideal for fruitful fishing.
On the right bank of the lagoons, several folds can be observed in the outcrops of the riverbed that can be described and interpreted in various ways, in addition to being associated with the phases of the Varisca orogeny.
