The village of Stokenham was known in Saxon times as Stoc or Stoc Hamme (which means Stoc meadows). By the 13th century the town was called Stoke in Hamme, so it is easy to see how that worked its way to us as Stokenham. In mediaeval times, St Humbert the Confessor was locally venerated as the patron saint of the town. The original church was dedicated to him. The church as it stands today is a nice example of the perpendicular style of medieval architecture - it is built on the side of a hill so that the whole of its length can be seen from below. It is dedicated to St Michael and All Angels, which is apparently common practise for churches standing on elevated sites.
The village is within the Start Bay area that was evacuated during World War 2 for training prior to the D Day landings. There was a large loss of American lives on this training exercise and the story is well worth exploring further.
