Coastal erosion is a natural process caused by a variety of factors: wind, waves, runoff waters ... These meteorological processes cause the loss of materials (sand / rocks) and landslides leading to shoreline retreat (ocean-continent limit) further inland.
The coast of Aquitaine is experiencing a regular level of shoreline retreat, on average 1 to 3 meters per year for the sandy coast and 25 cm for the rocky areas.
However, we can observe much more significant retreats, up to 25m on the sandy coast during storms, or on the rocky coast during cliff movements.
Quelles sont les stratégies de lutte contre l’érosion ?
La tendance actuelle des responsables publics de la protection du littoral est ce qu’on appelle la lutte active souple, il s’agit d’accompagner l’évolution du littoral plutôt que le fixer, c’est-à-dire de ne pas avoir recours, sauf exception, à des protections artificielles en dur. En 2000, l’Hexagone était équipé de 1300 ouvrages transversaux (épis) et 800 ouvrages longitudinaux (digues)
La stratégie adoptée est donc celle du génie écologique : la couverture des dunes au moyen de branchages (pour éviter que le vent n’emmène le sable à l’intérieur des terres), la plantation de végétaux au système racinaire chevelu et profond comme l’oyat, la mise en place de barrières anti-piétinement.
Parfois, on apporte du sable (40 000 m3 à chaque marée pendant quelques jours) pour sauver un bâtiment, comme cela a été mis en œuvre cet hiver pour sauver la villa « La Surprise » au lieu-dit l’Amélie-sur-Mer à Soulac (Earthcache GC7D3ET). Une technique discutable, car l’endroit où l’on prélève du sable risque alors de devenir une zone à forte érosion.
