Von 1985 bis 2012 wurde Elmo von Kevin Clash gespielt, seit 2013 von Ryan Dillon. Elmos deutsche Synchronstimme stammte ursprünglich von Sabine Falkenberg (bis 2012), inzwischen wird er von Martin Reinl gespielt und gesprochen. In den deutschen Folgen war er früher ein weibliches Monster und hieß Elma.
