Hello West Virginia Geocachers! We are so excited to bring you this trail of smart caches at Cacapon State Park and Resort! While we hoped to bring this trail to you earlier in the summer, COVID had its own plans, but we are so happy to still be able to release this trail! This place has been one of my favorites while growing up, and I’m so glad that I’m able to share the scenery and fun that this park has to offer with all of you!
Cacapon State Park is a 6,000-acre strip of land stretching from the Virginia state line to the Potomac River (Which divides Maryland and West Virginia). The park itself is located about 15 miles from Berkeley Springs (where you can also find the Berkeley Springs State Park). Cacapon State Park was created in the 1930’s by the Civilian Conservation Corps. The CCC built an 11-room log inn, a dam, a lake, and eventually expanded the park to include the bathhouse, beach, and cabins that you see today. The lodge was renovated again in 1956 to 50 rooms and expanded again in 1999. It is now 2020 and the lodge is under another expansion (with hope to be done in early 2021. The parks name is taken from the Cacapon River and Cacapon Mountain and is said to be a derivation of the Shawnee word meaning medicine. We all need a little caching medicine right now! Please enjoy this cache and as always, be aware of your surroundings and courteous of those around you!
