Geocache Description:

Since 1918, after the First World War, the red poppy (aka Remembrance Poppy or Buddy Poppy) has come to symbolize the fallen servicemembers who sacrificed it all in the name of their country.  In the United States, several veteran service organizations, including the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) distribute paper and plastic versions of the flowers during Memorial and Veterans Day to remind the community that their freedom was not free, but paid by the sacrifices of our men and women in the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard and Merchant Marine.

The VFW post where this cache is located, VFW Post 1177 of Loudoun County, has been active since 1931 and is composed of current and veteran servicemembers that have served overseas.  It was founded by World War I veterans seeking to support their comrades in the community.  Currently membership includes individuals that have served in all major conflicts since World War II.

As it was back then, its current mission is to support the veterans and servicemembers and their families of Loudoun County.  This support includes career counseling, financial relief, VA claims assistance, local government advocacy, remembrance honors for departed veterans, hospital morale visits, sponsorship of youth scholarship programs, flag retirement services, and community volunteer support.

About the Cache:

A larger than small waterproof container.  Its location may be obvious for more experienced cachers, and a challenge for new ones.  Great for trackables and other trinkets.  Comes prestocked with Buddy Poppy flowers and fliers.  Feel free to take them without the need to replace. As a fun option, if you have a veteran in the family, or if you, yourself are one, include his or her name, nickname or nickname (if comfortable), including branch of service and timeframe, in the “Honor Roll” log (Not the main Log Book).  This is totally optional.

Cache is placed with permission of VFW Post 1177 who is the 100% owner of the property and building.

Suggest parking in the area before the storage sheds.

The post does host various community events so be stealthy and careful if there is something going on.  Otherwise, this area is pretty easy to keep stealthy.

Congrats to The Creeds, hrothroc and misstetra dfolc56 for the triple FTF!
