Church Micro 13416...Mayfair - St George Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

Southerntrekker: Hi There

As the owner has not responded to either my log or my colleague's previous log requesting that they check this cache I am archiving it.

Please note that once the cache has been archived, this can not be undone. This is explained in the Help Center - http://support.groundspeak.com//index.php?pg=kb.page&id=70

You will need to create a new listing, put it back in for review and as long as it meets today's guidelines and no other caches have been published in the area causing a proximity problem, then it will be published.

Regards

Geocache Description:

Small tube

Church of St George, Hanover Square

Hanover Square Parish church. 1720-24 by John James. Portland ashlar. Large hexastyle Corinthian column portico, on shallow flight of steps over pavement, with pediment and modillion cornice. Portico flanked by obelisks. Short west tower behind portico with coupled column Wren inspired belfry and cupola. Side elevation to Maddox Street more Baroque exercise in Hawksmoor manner with 2 tiers of windows vertically composed with heavy rustication and pediments. To rear, below the columned and segmental arched Venetian east window is the single storey and basement vestry: dark brick with red brick dressings; Portland stone cornice and blocking course, stucco plinth. Three windows, sashes with original glazing bars, gauged segmental arches. Stone architrave doorway with panelled door at head of flight of steps, in a later C18 lobby added to north.

Church interior: cross vaulted aisles and segmental vaulted nave, galleries on square pillars with Corinthian columns above carrying vault. Reredos with Last Supper attributed to William Kent; original pulpit, organ case and finely carved Royal Arms. Reset mid C16 Flemish glass to east windows etc: screens and stalls by Sir Reginald Blokfield whose uncle Sir Arthur restored St George's in 1894.

Personal Note - I like to create CMs at churches with which I have a personal connection or memory. Being a choral singer, many of these may be to do with singing. I have passed this church many times and feel as though there is something about it which stands apart from other Mayfair churches. I wish it were something I could describe, but life isn't that easy unfortunately - you will just have to take my word (and hopefully understand what I mean when you visit!)
