ENGLISH : According to tradition, around the year 430, saint Germain, who was then bishop of Auxerre, met a young girl from Nanterre - the future patron saint of Paris, saint Geneviève - on the hills of Charonne. The legend says that the church was erected by the inhabitants on the spot of an oratory in memory of the encounter.
The Saint-Germain-de-Charonne church combines harmoniously some vestiges of the 12th century (big pillars of the tower) with an elegant architecture, mostly from 15th and 18th centuries. Before 1860, when it was attached to Paris, it was the parish church of the ancient village of Charonne and constituted its heart with the Saint-Blaise street.
It is the only church in Paris, along with Saint-Pierre de Montmartre church, to still be surrounded by its ancient churchyard (just like it was the case in the Middle Ages).
The church has been listed as a historical monument since 23rd May, 1923.
The famous final scene of the movie "Les Tontons flingueurs" (1963) by Georges Lautner, starring Lino Ventura, Bernard Blier and Francis Blanche, was shot inside and on the porch of the church.
The grave of the author Robert Brasillach, shot dead in 1945 because he collaborated with the Nazis during the Occupation, can be found in the graveyard next to the building.
